Big Cholla covered it real well for you. Also think abou this... What if that meth freak wants a gun and happens to notice yours? He might just run you down to get your gun. Personally, I carry almost every day. Would I ever let it be known in public? NO! That gives me the advantage if the worst of the worst ever happens. Also... Do you practice and keep your weapon maintained? Is your practice a few rounds into a paper target or do you shoot IDPA and your versed in concealment and cover? Are you proficient enough to do what you want to do without the bad guy getting it? Look at how many cops get shot with their own gun. Things to think about.
Take care.

Boy, you guys sure know how to go off onto tangents! The question wasn't which is better between open carry and concealed!
Until I see some actual stats showing that open carry is actually a detriment, I'm not going to worry about it (yes I have my CCW, and carry about 95% of the time).
I think billnourse has the best idea, get a CCW from UT and/or Florida. Actually the only state you get with a Utah permit is Washington state (Florida permit isn't honored there). Texas isn't a bad permit to get either, that permit has reciprocity with South Carolina, which Utah and Florida permits don't have.
Open carry just allows some wannabe tough guy to sart trouble, or some methhead. I open carry my pellet gun in the backyard to shoot blackbirds, grackles and fur bearing rodents eating my birdseed.

Sure, go ahead and think that........
I guess the people that can't or won't get concealed permits (for whatever reason, not talking about felony people here) should just not carry at all then right? After all, they're just wannabe tough guys (or ladies), not someone who wants to make sure they can defend themselves.......
Billnourse, What makes the Fla. and Utah CCW permit any different than say N.C.? Terry, Here is a dumb question, but what is a FOP and where can I get the sticker? I use my CC right often when I leave my property. At home I ALWAYS have it at the ready.

NC permits are for residents only. So people like me (an AZ resident) can't get one from that state. That looks like the main difference. NC actually looks like it has reciprocity with about 30 other states, not bad! Florida and Utah (Arizona and Texas) don't require you to be a state resident to get a permit from them.
FOP, unless I'm mistaken, is the Fraternal Order of Police. They usually call asking for donations, that sort of thing. Come to think of it, I haven't gotten a call in awhile from them.

So... be careful about trusting packing.org... When I got my NC CCW we had reciprocity with NO ONE. And NC will NOT honor CCWs from other states no matter what packing.org says... Not unless it has changed in the last two years.
FOP - Fraternal Order of Police.
And Florida is VERY lenient about letting people get permits. I know someone that gave a fake address when he applied and he got his permit. And FL has reciprocity with a lot of states.
If I recall packing.org used to have links to the local municipalities (sp?) and you would be best off checking straight from the source.
That being said... When I drive from NC to Chicago I wear my pistol... Concealed. And yes... I do wear it in the city (only on the way there and on the way out) no matter what Richie Daley and his moron of a wife think.
In most states... I will tell the officer if I have the weapon and where it is... In Chicago... I lie my butt off.
In NC I believe we have another law that goes right along with Open Carry... it is called "Public Insitement" Basically if more than two people complain about your gun you can be charged with insiting a riot. Stupid... but it happens. I am sure other states have equally stupid laws.
Just a headsup then for anyone Northeast bound...unless you're LEO do NOT get caught ( i stress caught) carrying ANY handgun in NY. NYC is even stricter. Unless you deal regularly in vast sums of $$ and can prove it and are willing to wait the min 6 months, or have a friend in the DAs office, there is NO chance of a CCW. I'm in the process now for just a target permit which is technically premises only (and I live on long island) , but of course allows you to transport to/from a range, providing its unloaded, locked, and the ammo is seperate from the firearm.
Now as to long guns.....NYC is restrictive and requires permits (can you blame them though) but outside the 5 boros, you can own practically anything thats not full auto, permit free.
On the open vs concealed carry, I would never advertise - not a smart move to show your hand if trouble arises. For the Non-LEOs, as to whats open vs concealed isn't that determined by whether you're wearing your vest or not, IF an issues arises?
Just my 2 cents...Be safe folks.
Lastly, just an interesting stat from a buddy who is going for his CCW in Tampa FL....there's more CCW permits in the Tampa area than in CA altogether.
