I use to live in Chicago and got my leathers from Kelly's Leather Works in Richmond, IL. About the only thing they didn't make was boots. Mostly the display in the shop was just to show what your options were then you ordered exactly what you wanted and they made it. I've since moved to the Knoxville area and have yet to find anything like their shop.
The last I was up that way I asked if they new of any similar shops around here. They said they are, pretty much, a dieing bred. They said there use to be a lot of shops like theirs but they're folding up all across the country. Getting displaced by cheap mass produced imports.
Personally, I don't mind paying more and I don't mind travelling. So I thought maybe get a thread going for people to post what custom leather shops they know of. I would like to see it limited to shops that do their own work. Contracting out locally is fine, but not local harley dealership full of chinesse made leathers.
Looks like my wife will be starting a new assignment in New York so maybe I'll stop by Vanson on my way up to see her. I'm mostly looking for shops to stop at while travelling. I generally have to think about it awhile and like to walk in and see what draws me time and again.
