All well intentioned, but you guys were giving him too much advice for a simple problem, some bikes just won't find neutral at a dead stop without rocking it back and forth a bit,
lot's of bikes have this problem, I've had 8 different bikes, not all of them harleys, several had this very same problem, and adjustments were all within specs.
As I recall, every Harley I have owned was tricky getting neutral. My 07 slips into neutral so easily that my size 13s push it right past and into 1st or 2nd if I don't use a soft touch by using both the heel and toe shifter together. To avoid the hassle when stopped I just keep it in 1st and hold in the clutch lever.
I agree that trans are trans, I like to slip into neutral when coming to a stop when all the gears are in mesh. Saves on holding on to the clutch. Bad thing to want to take off from a lite and be between gears with traffic coming towards you when you want to go when your 1 gear too high. Maybe my trans is fuuk-upp, but had it happen. I gave her the nuts an got out of trouble but you always have to aware. Like a safety on a gun, it's mechanical and it can fail.
I'm not a h-d mechanic, but it could be something as simple as you're idle speed is a little on the high side. The old time boys had to double clutch to get into gear, I think I'm showing my aqe.
once again thanks to all that responded! and to testifier, It is a long story but in a nut shell a 17 year old's father past away and the only thing his father left him was this road king. He said he did not want it any more because it reminded him of his father and he thought he was to young for an old mans bike! so he traded me. He also told me the tranny was bad and it would not start. I knew this was wrong because unless the tranny was siezed it would still start. I traded him, charged the battery filled her with gas, and have been good ever since (except getting her into neutral easily) I promise I got the better end of the deal! 98 R1 Vs. 94 Road King come on. The bike was bought at Daytona bike week and I have all of the paper work. custom paint all the chrome you could think of! the sale price of this bike was 34,000 after tax and once again I have the original sales reciept to prove it as well as it has a rebuilt motor with 1,350 miles on it and I also have the paper work to prove that so imo I made out
My 2000 RG used to be a little hard to get in to neutral at times and I mentioned this to an H-D tech. He suggested that I blip the throttle just a little and it should shift easier into neutral. I tried it and it worked for me. I also use Formula + in the primary and trans.
You got the better end of the deal in terms of market value, but sounds like a even swap as far a value to the individual. Chances are if he sold it he would have never actually bought a bike. He'll have a lot of fun on that R1 and he won't stick out like a sore thumb with his friends. Cheap entertainment and a chick magnet.
Wow! 1/4? no way thats too much. The rule of thumb is the thickness of a nickel..
You are correct, Cowboy. My bad.
Freeplay at the lever should be 1/16th" to 1/8". Thank you.
Looks like prob solved at any rate. Whenever I have trouble W/neut. I automatically move the bike a little and never would've thought to recomend that move....
