my uncle has had the same with his road king and the dealership told him every 3000 miles his bike would use 1-2 quarts my sportster would use 1 quart and my ultra used 1 quart same prob here
It's not the oil. It's who ever did the change and the person who does not check his oil who is at fault. If a dealer must do your changes for you don't be shy about checking the oil right in front of them and you should go over everything the did while looking for damage before you leave the shop.
We checked brother's steering head after his 1000 mile service in parking lot. Even used one of the plastic coffee stirrers from their waiting room. It was bone dry. They weren't happy we checked but did take it back in and regrease. We checked again in the parking lot.
If your oil capacity is only 2.5 qts, I would drop another qt. in there before riding it back to the dealer and I would have some firm words with the service manager in the G.M.'s office then they both get the same story and nobody is left out.
I change my oil about every 7-8k miles and use Mobil 1 v-twin oil... looses maybe 1/4 of a quart...I never let the dealer change my oil...I buy my oil at advance auto parts... right now they are running Mobil 5 quarts and a filter for $30.00...buy the v-twin oil and a car filter fro your car...Best deal around....
I guess i should have clarified. I DID do the service myself and it WAS full. No dealer to blame it on. On 2 different occasions after, I had to add oil which amounted to about 2 qts all together. Absolutely no leaks any where and no smoke. I'm tending to blame it on the oil itself. Gonna try mobil 1 or amsoil this time.
I use to loose about 1-2 quarts on my XL883C in 5000 miles but with the EGC almost none and i ride back roads a lot and the mountains...lot of stop n go...Sounds like a problem to me...
Wow, my brain must be scrambled as this was a hard thread to read
Anyway I have never had a problem with HD fluids but I did buy a case of Mobil 1 V-Twin going forward. I would't blame it on the oil. Something else is wrong or you didn't add enough to begin with.

I've been told that synthetic oil doesn't smoke. So if you have engine problems and are burning oil you won't know it by the lack of smoke. Used car hustlers will change an old car to synthetic oil to get rid of the smoke that comes from burning oil. Just a thought.
