You need to be careful when you just say "Dunlop". As seen in the other thread where people referred to the Metzler "880", there is also a difference between the Dunlop 401 vs. the newer Dunlop Elite 3 tires. The Elite 3 should produce higher mileage than the 401.
Interesting thread on the Metzler 880 v. Dunlop. And I've read lots of others.
Here's a new question:
Here in Montana, we have a lot of chip-seal backroads which chew tires up.
What kind of tire would be better for that?
EDIT: I'm asking about longevity v. handling
Around here Dunlops will follow cracks, grooves, and different surfaces on the pavement. The Metzeler has just about eliminated that problem. I am more concerned about the bike going down the road staight rather than how long the tire is going to last.
I put about 30 miles on my new AVON Storms yesterday evening...plan to put 2-300 on it today to make a comparison with the ME880 I replaced....the ME880s were a vast improvement over the K591/D401 combo.ME880s(pretty much gone at 8500m) wore faster than the Dunlops(pretty much gone at 10500m)...the AVON is supposed to be made of some new material (SRS compound)that gives both grip and better wear...we will see.....:>)
In my experience Dunlops definitely give longer mileage than Metzeler - by almost 50%. I get around 15k on a rear Dunlop. Metzeler gave me 9,000 miles. The Dunlops on the '09 H-D's are different tread pattern than the previous years and I like it alot. I've got 8,000 miles on the bike right now and still LOTS of tread left on the rear tire.

I have the ME880 and live on a chip sealed road and it's fine. it is also great on these sh!tty Cali roads and it doesn't follow cracks and road snakes...
I just never liked dunlop tires very much. There not a bad tire but I like a stickier tire than that. I Always buy ME 880s and really like them. I use to run Avon venoms when I had the sporty. They are also a big improvment over dunlop IMO.
