Default Soft Chrome ???

Is it my imagination or does it seem that chrome does not seem as hard or resistant to scratches as years past? It seems to me that years ago I did not have to baby chrome finishes as much as I today just to protect the finish.

It also seems to pit more and doesn't quite have the visual depth from 30 years ago.

CHEAP CRAP !! As, Joe, would say.
http://www.am1500.com/gl/index.shtml

The 'new' chrome, is just that, CHEAP CRAP.
The chrome you are referring to, from yrs ago, is triple plated. Copper, nickel, then chrome. Buffed in between layers. This chit is just single plated.

But when given the choice over the years, the vast majority of peeps, bought the $150 wheel, NOT the $300 wheel. The Chinese made the $150, the US triple plater, made the $300. Gee, wonder which one is in business, today????
WE are now living with OUR CHOICE. And IT IS, no doubt about it, CHEAP CRAP.
I see wheels that are not even 3 yrs old, rust, flaking, JUST chit. Handlebars rusting and peeling. Headlight buckets. H*LL, the fwd controls that were 'new' on the 78 when I bought it, are peeling like a sunburnt baby's azz, 2 yrs old.

The girder on the chop, is 37 yrs old. The chrome is STILL PERFECT on it.

Another issue, that comes up, the EPA. Plating involves multiple NASTY chemicals and metals. Thus the 'cost' involved in doing it RIGHT.

BUT, WE can pay NOW, or PAY LATER. (Cause we have to keep replacing the 3 yr old chit, with new chit that only lasts 3 or 5 yrs.) And not only is it the cost to buy the items over, it is the $$ to keep removing the old chit, and installing the new chit.

There are still some DAMMD GOOD platers out there. It's expensive, BUT you know when you bolt it on, it'll STILL be bolted on, when you git to be an ol' man.

Shoot, the manufacturers and suppliers want us to pay now and pay again and again. They don't want anything to last too long and we just keep lapping up the cheap junk while the bastards laugh all the way to the bank. The thing is, to be competitive, manufacturers have to do things as cheap as they can get away with because John Q Public doesn't want quality, just "affordability". " So really all we have to blame are ourselves.

To quote a cliche', "They don't make it like they used to".

Some places still make it like they used to. Those are the companies that deserve our business if ya can still afford it.
