Default Electrical gremlin??? Need opinions...

Coming home this evening from a local bike night I experienced what appears to be an electrical problem. The headlight would go dim, then brighten. The speedo would go completely out, then light back up. I had no problem starting the bike - it ran fine. Thoughts?

First place I would look is a loose ground at the negative battery cable.

Update: It stranded me today on my way to the shop. I filled up with gas, turned the key - nothing. The tow truck showed within an hour and dropped me and the bike off at the dealer. Turned out to be loose wires like you said. No charge under warranty and as a HOG member I should get most of the $45 towing fee reimbursed.

I've had the same symptoms on my Dyna, tightened the bolt to the battery a
eighth of a turn and haven't seen it happen since, will the bike run if the battery
is disconnected, ie loose connection? Thnx, Mark

The battery is the heart of the electrical system, everything is running off the battery. The charging system is there to charge the battery not run electrics. There has been a lot of loose battery cables mentioned here, I can imagine how many dealers have seen this and yet nothing from the MOCO. Now why should that not surprise me. Keep them cables tight!

Unlike a Car, A Harley will not run with the Battery disconnected.

I've has an electrical problem that has reared it's head twice on my Deluxe. Stopped for gas then went to start her up and nothing. The clip that holds the hot wire to the starter would vibrate loose but not come off. If you did a visual scan everything would look normal. To fix the problem you need a screw driver or needle nose pliers to press the clip firmly back onto the mount. Just passing on another electrical gremlin that you might come across.
