Want to relate a very bad experience I had this morning with a MDA ride. It was called 'An Observation' Ride. We were given a list of roads, turn right here, turn left here, all with the road names. Since I was not familiar with the roads, didn't know anyone on the ride, and usually don't read while on a ride, I was quickly separated from the group, led by a fire truck.
I know what a poker run is (from my observation, an excuse to drink which I don't), but what are the definitions of 'rides.' The enjoyable rides on which I've been are large charity rides (those with a purpose or benefit), well led, and with a 'trailer rider' at the end, all with blocked intersections.
If a ride is not police escorted, I'll steer clear of it, the hard lesson I learned this morning.
Added later -- for all we read about the helpfulness of bikers to other bikers, NOT one other biker stopped to help me! Who stopped, two lawn crews, to make sure I was ok!
led by a fire truck???

Some events are better organized than others. We had a toy ride here at Christmas with several thousand bikes. If the streets had not been blocked off through town, it would have been chaos. There is some talk locally that next year the City will not support the Toy Run with police. If that happens, most bikers will probably avoid it and the kids who benefit from it will be the ones who suffer. I think you guys with the one liners failed to understand Paul's intent with this post.

I do the anual Ride for Kids held in Phoenix in October. That's the only one I do as I don't like traveling in groups like that. Two years ago the guy in front of me pulled out his cell phone and made a call. I consider that idiotic.
Likewise when I take off on my long week-ends I go alone. If I want to turn left, I do. If I want to stop, I do. I guess it's pehaps a little bit more of an adventure to explore alone.
