Thinking of getting a 09 electra glide classic but may want to add the rear speakers down the road. Are the wiring harnesses the same between the 09 Ultra and the 09 Classic? Doesnt seem worth it to pay a couple extra grand for the ultra when the only big differences seem to be the Lower Guards(hate them), CB/Intercom(will never use), rear speakers(probably would want)and the wrap around lights on the tour pack(thinking of adding the luggage rack with the LED lights)any thoughts?
I know with my 03 Classic the wife had a hard time hearing the tunes with only two speakers but I never added the rears to see how it sounded. I did notice that the Ultra has a 80 watt stereo vs the Classic only has a 40 watt stereo. I can't tell you if that makes much difference in the sound.
If you go the classic route I have read some posts from people who have used Hog Tunes to add the rear speakers as they were cheaper than HD. The site is hogtunes.com.
If you start adding many lights or stereo upgrades, it does not take long to get up to the price of a Ultra.
I would think the basic wiring harness would be the same between both bikes. I don't know that for a fact but based on my experience with other machines, I think it's likely. Having said that, and assuming it's true, don't be surprised if there is a sub harness needed to run from the main harness to the speakers.
Also, based on everything else I've read concerning the HK radio, don't be surprised if you have to take it to the dealer to have the programming updated so the system will "know" that it's got two more speakers plugged in!
Should be an expert lurking around here somewhere, I'm certainly not in that catagory. My thought is that the basic main wiring harness on touring models is likely the same. There is just more of it interconnected on some as on the Ultra. There should probably be plugs in front end and under seat where additional harnesses are added as needed. Dealers should hopefully be able to cross check out part numbers to see what is the same between them.
Guess we posted similar responses at the same time.
I have an '08 Classic which I have turned into an Ultra. The rear speakers are the one thing I think were a waste of money. I can't hear them and my wife doesn't ride. My grandaughter rides with me and can hear either the front or rear speakers.
As far as the harness, I had to add an interconnect harness but that was also for the CB and intercom. I don't know what is required for the speakers only. An HD parts guy certainly should know.
