Do yourself a biggie favor, dont push it to get it done too fast. pace yourself. Geyt off and fuel at no more than every 100 miles. walk around a couple of minutes. Perhaps even 75 once in a while. Do this or you'll think you just did a couple months in proson with a cellmate called BUBBA! Doing one also in abouta month.........but on a Ultra,AHHHHHHHH!!!
Did it twice on a Fat Boy. I live in the Chicagoland area, so we rode around Lake Michigan. Didn't "enjoy" it either time. The third time it came up, I thought to myself, "I'm not enjoying this at all, it's punishment, so why am I doing it". Decided I didn't have to prove a point to anyone including myself, and that's the last time I did it. To each his own though, if you do enjoy it "Iron Butt away"!!!
I did an Iron Butt ride 2 years ago on an 05 883C sportster upgraded to a 1250. I had a Mustang seat on it and my *** wasn't sore at all after the ride. My back was the part that was sore.
Also another sucky thing was my bike was using a quart of oil every 500 miles so I had to carry oil with me and put some in at every gas stop.
It was a great ride and I would do it again on the Sporty if I still owned it. Traded it in for an 07 Street Bob which I am gonna ride next month in another Iron Butt ride but this one is for 2 world's records. I got a Mustang seat for the Bob and I can't wait.

Largest Group SaddleSore 1K Ride (need at least 159 bikes and there are over 400 registered riders so far)
and
Largest group Saddlesore 1K ride inside Virginia
I'm getting ready to do one on my FXDC. Good luck to ya! I think the key is in the planning, get it planned out to a tee with mileage/time checkpoints and it'll be easier.

Sheepskin seat cover, bicycle shorts and lots of anti monkey butt powder (ie baby powder). Make a schedule and keep to it. Combine food and fuel stops. Stay away from caffeine. Drink lots of water. RIDER magazine had an article on how to best do one, about a year or so ago. See if you can dig that up and read it. It gives a lot of tips.
