Ok, I enjoy riding and I know that alot of organizations have rides for charity. However, my complaint with this is that most of the runs go from bar to bar in my area. Now I will drink, but not when im on my bike. The problem that has been occurring lately is that at several of the runs, someone dies or is seriously injured when they crash due to being intoxicated. What are your feelings on this subject and what is your experiences on these types of rides
I do the key west poker run every year for the last 4.We stop at all the stops and usually have atleast 1 beer in each then keep going. It's really hot so we're obviously thirsty. But we dont over do it.You drink past what you should and you will have a mishap to yourself or worst someone else.
Poker runs, and drinking....
hmmm... I don't know.
Sounds pretty much normal to me. If people are
getting too intoxicated and doing damage, then maybe they shouldn't
be riding in the first place.
Or, maybe they should just come to New Mexico!
Been on probably 500 poker runs over the years and never once saw anybody hurt from drinking or any other reason. Had some large ones also. 400+ bikes. Did I mention I have failed to win anything in those 500 poker runs. I must do it to donate money. Kind of like going to the casino.
I donât participate in these events. I hear of guys in their 40âs and 50âs buying new Harleys and running off the roads and killing themselves because they barely know how to ride. Iâm assuming a hand full of these guys attend these rides your talking about too. Now you get these guys full of beer and what do you have.

I was the head of a memorial/fundraiser run for a firefighter a few years back.Everything was donated....food,drink,raffle & prizes, etc. The only thing I did not provide for this run was any kind of booze. The reason for this run was to raise $$ for the wife & 3 kids that were left without a father/husband.I did not want the run to turn into a drunken mess & I wanted everyone that attended to get there & home safe.Since this was my brainstorm I did not want any fatalities on my watch so to speak.
The run was a great success, raised alot of $$,no one was hurt & even made the paper.I was very proud of myself for 1:I never did this before & had absolutly no idea how to go about it.....2: no one was hurt & all had a great time.Any drinking was done on their time after the run
I've only been on a couple of poker runs. Yeah, at each place people were wetting their whistle but each bar that was on the stop gave out free food for the people on the ride. I'm not talking about steak and lobster tails but something cheap and easy like hot dogs or chili. Was pretty good and from what I saw - no accidents.
Funny this would come up today as I was just talking about this with some friends last night. Yesterday around mid-afternoon, I headed to my favorite watering hole to have a sandwich and happened to be there during a time when many poker run participants stopped in. About 75% of these folks ordered drinks and a couple even ordered shots. I dunno, but that just seems like asking for trouble to me.
I've never done a poker run, mostly because I have enough riding planned to keep me satisfied as it is.
