Default New + Question

Hello all,

I have been looking into entry level HDs for a while noe and since I saw the Iron 883, I am ready/convinced on taking the plunge.

I do have a few questions on my dealership experience that I would like to run by you all.

History:

The 8K sticker price turned into 10K after all the additional jargain the salesperson threw at me. Approx 1K was for a 5 year warranty and another approx 1K was for dealer/set-up fee. I have been in the car business (service AND sales) and left b/c of the LACK of integrity with dealerships and service. So, just walking into HD my guard was/is up and I am skeptical on a lot of things...lol

Questions:

1. Is this 5 year warranty worth a darn or is it just going to be a hassle anytime something goes wrong? I don't beat up on my stuff and I do regular maintenance.....if something breaks, 99/100 times its just b/c it "did"....I dont want the fighting and arguing over who pays for what....if it's going to be like that, I'll do it all myself.

2. Is the dealer/set-up fee crazy, or is it just me? 1K for some handlebars and what not? I know they need to pay their people and do PDI's, etc but I am willing to bet that $500 reasonably covers those concerns.

3. Will doing a cash sale bring me significant bargaining power? It SURELY does in the car world.....seems a little less so for bikes and am not sure why. I can do an all cash sale, but I want to knock 1K off the deal. Is it reasonable? I want it for 9K out the door w/ warranty.

Thanks for reading and any input in advance

-A.

It's a buyer's market out there. You should have a lot of bargaining power, with or without cash. Plenty of dealers right now are selling at MSRP with $500 - $1500 worth of incentives (accessories, cash back, etc). You should be able to at least get them to knock off the freight+setup charges. If there's other H-D dealers in your area, shop around. If they want your business, they'll compete for it.

The 5 year warranty I would say depends on how much you plan on riding. One thing to keep in mind with that warranty, you can wait till the two years is almost up and then tack on the extra 3. I would not get the 5 year up front.

1K in set up fee is high. I have bought 2 new bikes and have not paid over 400 for set up at two seperate dealers.

Maybe there is another dealer close by that you can throw the same numbers at and make a better deal?

MSRP is for the Iron is $7899.

Buyers market, offer them $8K. If you got the cash look at an old cream puff for under $10K. Lots of them out there. You'll outgrow that 883 pretty fast.

WOW 2006 WG - $8450 This one has been down but an easy fix.

This was just looking for 5 minutes. Lots of good deals right now. Unless you need the financing why buy new?

Shop around. Don't let them run the show. I had dealer try that **** on me when I bought my first bike. Some of them act like their doing you a favor. I walked out of that dealer ship and took my money down the road. You can get 883 at any dealership. They need to convince you why you should buy it from them and not the other guy. WHEEL AND DEAL BRO

They see someone new and try to hit with the extras, they get a little incentive in their paycheck. Don't go over the MSRP + $250.00 Docking fee price, make em throw in the extras. They are still hurting and need to make the sales. They still make profits at MSRP So don't let em push you around.

I also second searching for a cream puff. The deals out there are unreal. Plus contrary to popular opinion, the Sporty is NOT an entry level bike. They are (were) Harley's sports bike and they ride and handle a lot different then say a lowrider or softtail. Don't get me wrong, I loved my Sporty, but I had already been riding for a lot of years when I got it.

The other thing is shop around and get a better deal, that price and the addons seem really high to me.

I think the market may be different for the 883 Iron. I know the dealers here can't keep a black one on the show room floor. The sell them as soon as they get them. If thats the case where you're at it might be tough to talk them down, but it doesn't hurt to shop around.

Price seems High to me, I would look at a Dyna Superglide 2007 + for your 10G's your bound to find something, as the other people have said you will grow out of a sporty, try and have some Demo rides on the different bikes, Superglide is still best value for the bucks and a great machine,

Do not pay that - run from that dealer and go to another - they are raping you.
I bought a 2009 Street Glide in December and paid $1500 UNDER MSRP and no setup or delivery, just tax. Street Glides are the most popular Bike out there - more than the 883 Iron(good choice by the way). If you can tell us where you are, we can help with What dealer to go to..that would help.

Now an 883 is not as much, so this is what I would do. Walk in, tell them you will buy if they meet your price - then offer $750 off the MSRP and tell them that price OUT THE DOOR plus tax and title only. If they balk, go somewhere else.

DO NOT SETTLE, you can get a deal. Some dealers won't deal, some will. If you want to come to Wisconsin, I can tell you right were to go. Heck, buy it here and it will cost you 300 to ship it...
