I've not had luck with half shells either. They always act like a sail and try to pull my head off and shift around in the wind. I guess they work ok behind a fairing or windshield but I rarely ride with my windshield on unless it's cold. My Scorpion full face is so much more comfortable, plus I can listen to my ipod while riding. Not many people ride with a full face on a Harley but it is way more comfortable to me than a half shell.
When I wear my half helmet (usually don't wear a helmet) I do really tighten it down. If I don't have the chin strap tight the helmet will tend to lift at speed, I think. It's been a long time since I wore it. If you are concerned about it moving around during an accident, it probably will but it should be good for the initial impact, which is usually the critical one.
I hear ya. I will put my big hat on when it is really cold and/or raining. Can't wait to get it off.
I normally wear a Super Seer half helmet. You may want to have a look at their helmets, they have a second strap at the back of the head and the helmet is very solid on my head. Mail order only http://www.superseer.com/ - not cheap but good quality.
I have the same problem with the half's. My full face helmet I bought at the Harley shop works good and seems to have good ventilation. When I tried on a 1/2 at the shop in a Large it was huge and then the 1/2 medium was tighter than heck. Think I'll just stay with the full.
Have you considered a 3/4? Coming from a FF, I initially wanted a half, and tried on a LOT. Could not find one that felt right on my head. Ended up with a Fulmer V2 and couldn't be happier with it. Great secure fit right from the get-go. Surprisingly small and lightweight, especially for the price. And it's DOT approved.
