I love the feel of the bike without the shield and in summer it's off alot. In So Cal the bugs aren't nearly as bad as other parts of the country, but we still have some and they aren't fun when you take one on the cheek at 70 mph!
I've really, really tried to "like" the detachable windshield that came with my bike. Unfortunately, there's been WAAAAY too many decades/10's of thousands of miles on bikes... none of them with windshields... and it takes too much of my biking "experience" from me. I love the wind and the open (non-distorted) vista before me that I get without a windshield.
I took the shield off yesterday for a ride and it was low wind and the view is so clear without it and my bike looks better without it, Got a few bugs in the face, I can livewith it, I think I am going to leave it off for awhile.
All the guys I ride with have baggers with shields and they always give me crap about how much the wind and bugs must suck because I don't have a shield. I keep telling them I wouldn't have it anyother way, but they just don't seem to understand. I think I am going to sneek into my boss's garage and steal his shield for a week so he can ride in the wind and get the full experience and then maybe he will give me a little less crap about it!
