To the OP, the military is paid fair at best. I am speaking from the enlisted side of the house. O's can afford whatever they desire within reason. It wasn't untill I reached the "super" grades that I could start to afford what both me and my family desired.
With that, I chose to buy before I retired so the sled would be paid off when the day comes.
For me, a military member my reasons for waiting were varried between assignments all over the globe coupled with the normal family probs of kids being born and such that uncle sugga don't pay for.
As for the OP, we are never promised tomorrow and who knows what shape we will be in when we get there. I am a big proponent of living for today and enjoying life to its fullest. It's not life if you aren't living!
Then again, I'm actually a bit different from most. I only have a house debt and motorcycle debt. I chose to own a used Caravan and used Dodge Ram so I have the title to both. Priorities man; gotta have my bike. I'm not waiting until retirement.
I guess I don't really have a question...just curious why so many guys deprive themselves of this kind of enjoyment.
Well, I'm not different from you. You and I are exactly in the same boat. 2 H's payment books is all I currently have. House and Harley. The rest is paid for. Having fun seeing wads of cash in my pocket and bank accounts.
My Motto: "Work hard during the weekdays and Play hard on the weekends".
Retirement isn't going to be around for many of us, Americans cuz our Government is raping and robbing us to death...So, Might as well as go/get what's on your dream list and enjoy the fun part before death hits on you.
On to bonuses...I cannot believe the money they're throwing at new recruits, at least in my CMF. I was talking to a group of Soldiers the other day. One recieved 40K for two years. It was a 20K bonus plus 20K to do a quick ship. We have 40K for 5 years and I had another Soldier get 60K for 6years!
I'm also a bonus baby. I didn't get an initial enlistment bonuse but I got 30K at 5years, 40K at 9yrs and 15K at 11yrs. They're also giving up to 50K (10K/year past 20yrs) for SFC in my CMF to stay past 20years.
