I didn't read all of the responses so this may have been said previously.
Sometimes if it appears that drivers are not going to see us, myself or a number in our group will pull in the clutch and rev the engine to get the exhaust louder - it has gotten drivers attention.
Beeping your horn would have the same effect, eh?
One thing I do know, from experience - loud pipes scare the hell out of deer, raccoons & geese.

I personally do not have a problem with loud pipes-I have a bike with and a couple more without.
But I wont ride with someone with a whirling tail light or whizzing headlite- I hate them things-
Face it- Loud pipes are for us- they sound wild and mean and fast and kewl etc. Performance- negligable-
And tooting a horn does a better job of letting people know you are there and that they are screwing up.
As far as scaring deer- was that you that scared them deer into my lane last week, with your loud pipes. LOL
Us bikers having accidents is what I hate to see-ride hard, be carefull.
