If you're taking I-95 from NC to Daytona, leave the fuel can at home, you won't need it. I've taken that route all the way from MD about 15 times. There are plenty of gas stations at reasonable intervals.

I agree with what others have said, get a windshield. That distance will beat you to death without one.

1000 miles in 24 hrs is a breeze. I've made the 890 miles from home to Dayton in as little as 13-1/2 hrs. Usually average about 15 hrs.

I agree with others. Hydration is not going to be your problem. You will need fuel every 150-200 miles. Hydrate then, and take a break. Stop for meals, tie that into gas stops if possible. That windshield will be key though. Get one put on if you can.

Whatever speed you cruise at, with stops for gas or whatever, you will average about 10 mph slower at the end of the day. I've done the 1000 in 24 and been/ridden to Sturgis seven times and that always works out about right. That's without f*&kin' around during stops. If you run 80 all day it'll take you about 15 hours. And you will wish you had a windshield.

Drugs!!! Bring lots of drugs. and whiskey!!!
I like your idea of doing it w/o a windshield, that's tuff. But DO NOT do it at night!! The bugs will kill you. One shot to the neck with a good sized bug goin' 80mph and you're toast. You'll be glad you brought all those drugs.

good luck bro.

As others have mentioned, 1000 miles in 24 hours is easy, especially if you are running interstate speeds - there is another one for 1500 miles in 24 hours where you really have to manage your stops.

I recently did a cross coutry ride and stopped every 80 miles. The first stop is for a brief five minute stretch (reduces fatigue) the second stop for gas, stretch, etc.

A windshield will really help to reduce fatigue.

Windshields are for cars. Nah.... but really... I don't like windshields on bikes but have been tempted to get a small one for this bike. I gotta work all day tomorrow and the next day and the morning after that I'm leaving so I don't really have the time to put a windshield on it for this trip. I got a 30 oz fuel can JUST IN CASE. About 1/4 gallon, should be good for an extra ten miles range if I do happen to screw up and run out of gas. My reserve light normally comes on at about 115 miles if I'm riding really hard not on the highway will go up to about 130 miles before coming on if I'm doing easier riding highway miles. So I will need to be stopping about every 140-150 miles to be on the safe side. I also got a 70 oz "Camelbak Unbottle Reservoir" (this one: http://www.rei.com/product/750000) and an extender tube for it. Gonna mount the Camelbak thing on my passenger backrest and run the tube up to where I can reach it. I might need to refill it once during the trip but that's ok. If it gets to be 8pm and I'm still going and still a couple of hours from home and I'm just completely wiped out then I'll grab a hotel room for 4 hours or so and then finish up the trip. I'm gonna make it... I know I can... I know I can... I know I can...

All your questions can probably be answered on their site, which you must know about if you are planning one. Here's the link:

The best tip I could give you, is that you can make better time driving a reasonable speed, than going fast and having to make more gas stops.

Either way, 1000 miles in 24 hours should be no problem if you don't waste a lot of time at stops.

More power to you without the windshield, but I love mine on long rides, and I have a Dyna! Plus the windshield allows me to toss a couple of water bottles down between the windshield and handlebars/headlight/etc. I vote yes on the hydration too and agree on taking a little more time to enjoy yourself. 5 more minutes shakin' it out is a good thing. Don't forget the cell phone and get youir tires properly inflated.

Good Luck, let us know how it goes, and be safe!
