Neutral. Unless incline or decline would feel more secure in gear. And of course you need to remember you put it in gear before you thumb the starter or you could end up with a serious butt puckering experience.

Always 1st. It can travel in any other gear same as your cage. Although with cage, reverse is stronger, so there ya go.

Sometimes I leave it in neutral other times it's first. There's no rhyme or reason to it I guess. I do make d@mn sure it's in neutral before I start it though. Being scared spitless once is quite enough thank you.

Book says to shift into neutral before stopping engine. (Shifting when engine is stopped may damage gears)

That said I leave it in gear when I park it .

I leave mine in first gear always, and let it roll into the gear before putting down my jiffy stand (as stated above) starting in gear isn't a problem for me because the clutch must be pulled in to start the bike (police bike)

Always in first gear except in my garage which I know is flat and level and that no one else will set on it, push it, bump it with their car, etc.

Since I never trust the neutral light I'm holding in the clutch when I start it anyhow.
