Around northern VA - not too many bugs compared to northern WI where I grew up. I had a full face (learners permit) that looked like that one evening after a spring ride. Back then (10 yrs ago), I'd try to be home by dusk. (I was 20, no shield, too many bugs and deer) But here - not enough bugs for me to worry about...
I feel your pain ! I wear this when I ride to work at night. All though I will say, the nights this summer here in Pa have been in the lower 50s so the bugs haven't been as bad.
I've gotten home at night and my glasses had bugs all over them and my helmet (half or novelty) did too but none on the face. My guess is they slide off the surface area of the skin easier then off plastic.
Thats exactly why the windshield stays on my bike all the time. June bugs and japanese beetles hurt.I was driving my truck on the highway and was hitting so many japanese beetles it sounded like rocks hitting my windshield. I saw a ton of bikes going the other way with no wind shield and no helmet. Just sunglasses and I couldnt help but think thats gotta hurt.
I live in the sticks, and when I ride, I usually head west of here, which is even MORE sticks (and fewer people). Also, I run roads that go along rivers quite often. I almost never see a stop light, and stop signs are few and far between as well. I can easily run 70-80 mph all day and night, without ever seeing a cop (speed limit is usually 55, except when passing through a town).
Lightening bugs splatting on the face shield are quite interesting. Maybe they see my headlight and think I'm the queen ladybug!
We went out for a ride, and then dinner with a friend who rides lidless. Aside from the usual thousands of bugs, we went through two HUGE clouds of bugs. When we got to the restaurant, he joked that he wasn't hungry any more.
No windshield, no helmet, and lots of cornfields and the airport. Bugs are heavier at dusk and dawn it seems like and sometimes you are just going to take a good hit. Wouldn't have it any other way. I saw a Fox or a coyote coming home last night in my subdivsion running along the treeline.
It is the same way up here. I like to ride in the sticks and along the river, you just get pelted at dusk. I don't ride with a windshield but do wear a FF. Even my jacket is full of bug guts.
