I usually pop it in neutral and take my hands off the controls. Mind you, I always peek in the mirror to see what is going on behind me. If cars are approaching I'll wait with hands on controls, in gear until then stop behind me. Then pop it in neutral. When the light turns green, I can put my hands on the bars, pull in the clutch, pop it in gear and pull away usually before the car beside me has started. But I have cat like reflexes. haha.
I wait at the light in gear, squeezing the brake lever every second or two until someone stops behind me. Once someone is behind me, I put it in neutral so the light will change.
+1 on what remike says. I always watch in my rear view mirror for the car behind me to stop.
But the poll makes no sense, I approach a stop light by downshifting and use the brakes if need be . I work through all the gears and the last move is to shift into 1st gear as I bring the bike to a stop. I don't see the sense in braking to bring the bike to a stop and them mashing down on the shift lever through 5 or 6 gears and neutral. It's much easier to downshift through the gears to assist in your stopping.
