I have this same issue with my Sportster.I have tried different brands of fuel,I use the octain booster ,it does help.Took it to the Harley dealer,they told me it was my primary chain making noise.

If she is stock, like you got her from the stealer
Take it back.

The only real fix is to pull some timing out of it.

If you have a power commander you can retard your timing in a matter of seconds with a laptop.
Do you have any type of aftermarket fuel management?

No and probably won't be able to till at least this winter. $350+ is not really in the budget right now.

My bike will ping with premium gas. I ALWAYS add 116 race gas to solve that issue. It smells good too!

That is the fix, however, until you can get a power commander, go to the auto parts store and buy some NOS Racing Formula octane boost. Don't use any of the others. Use a few oz per tank, and this will stop the pinging for now.

My '08 Nighttrain has started to ping badly. Just rode from Oregon to Tennessee and back and found the bike pinging at any acceleration starting over 65mph. The only exception was in MO and TN where I was able to get 93 premium. Pings more the hotter the ambient temperature. Got so bad in WY with a headwind that I kept having to roll off the throttle and was soon passed by an eff'ng Toyota Prius.

The bike did not do this in its first 9K miles.

The local dealer says they can't reproduce the problem. How do I convince them that there is a problem while I still have a warranty?
