1200 Sportster...I DON'T THINK SO
Caught that myself!
I must have actually had a good AMF because I rode the butt off of my 1981 Sportster. Yes the first 1981's were still under the control of AMF!!!!
OH and Troll alert!
Lots of guys called Superglides "1200 Sportsters" because of the forks, eyebrow, and general family resemblance. Never heard anyone that owned one call it that however. The HD's of the '70s weren't bad bikes in comparison to the HD's of the '60s, or the Brit bikes of that era either.
I think history shows that without the infusion of AMF money and organization HD would have gone away. And not in a way that would have ever seen them making motorcycles again. The worst of the bad AMF bikes were in the very first days, and that had a lot to do with discontented workers and the new management. The '84 Shovels are the best iron barrel bikes the MoCo ever made, and some of the best ever from HD. Same tooling as they had years earlier, but dedicated workers that knew they were seeing the end of an era.
Poc it was a 1000 not a 1200 now that you mention it . I love the Harleys I have now, but that bike was a nightmare I want to forget lol. For those still rooting for the old air cooled harleys racing . My buell XB12R Firebolt (new leftover 2007)will be racing the end of the summer and is now 1420cc with the BEST of every racing part available in the USA (actual facorty parts)and some you have never seen from Europe (19 row oil cooler, AST suspension, 50mm headers ect) Im having a professional do the riding ( im 44, 6-4 240lbs and beat up lol) we are thinking at least 160 hp and 130 lbs torque at the crank so on the short to medium straits we can give the jap bikes fits ( due to almost double the torque .) On the long straits we are toast though lol. With all that cooling and greater displacement it is faster than the XBRR and will hold up A bit better ( why the XBRR didnt have more oil cooling is a mystery ?) il Keep you poster winning or losing . jake
Panz and smokey I guess we have internet muscles do we ? go to a Boxing gym and show them what tough guys you are . They have REAL tough guys there . reguardless of displacement the japanese bikes I owned afterwards where far more dependable machines . But I NEVER downed anouther rider for the bike he owned. Critisizing someone elses bike doesnt make your bike any better . Yes I forgot it was a 1000 and I dont know what a TROLL? is . I do respond to any threads I write . Not every hour . I do have a life , work , family ect .
I think everyone forgets how technology moves on - lots of discussion of leaking oil etc. That doesn't make them bad bikes - my 77 XLH drops 3 or 4 spots and that's all. Beautiful bike too - post some pix one day.
I think the "launch" models are often the best Harleys, when the TC engine was launched in 99 the key model was the FXDX, I bought one and the build quality is fantastic as is the paint, chrome etc. Talk to people with 00 and 01 models and they're not as happy. So my view is that HD put everything on to these models 'cos they couldn't afford a screw up.
For all the AMF /Shovelhead doubters , go check out :Shovels are un-reliable......Our mythbuster, http://shovelhead.us/forum/showthread.php?t=26284
Keep in mind newest Shovel is 26 years old! I have 3 HD's 1 07 Ultra thats OK , just a shame warranty support SUX! And 2 shovels 77 chopped & raked with a 93 S&S stoker in it that does mark it's spot if left alone too long (until needed I see no reason to fix small leaks) and a 5700 original mile FLT (tour glide) that leaks NOTHING , and Once I install the air ride rear shocks , will have no problem taking it anywhere , as ANY well maintained ( yes some DO require more .... along with some loctite!) but a shovel or pan can be just as or even more reliable than the current twinkies.
No,without AMF Harley may not be here today. The bikes then were a sign of the times,I owned three of them all bought new,and except for minor problems they were great machines. No doubt new machines are better, again a sign of the times, just like automobiles.Remember?
