Default Throttle Cables

I'm thinking about changing to braided cables and looked at the routing of the throttle/idle cables and noticed they are routed under the tank. Will I have to remove the tank in order to remove/install them, or can I get away with just lifting the tank some to route them?

You probably won't even have to lift the tank. I didn't have to when I put my apes on. There was plenty of room. Your particular situation may be different. On my bike the cruise control part is even accessible without moving the tank.

Ok, thanks. I think I will go ahead and order them and install them the first chance I get after receiving them.

I just changed mine out to SS cables and i just removed my tank which made install easy. But yes you could get away with just lifting the tank from the back. As there are little clips or cable holders under tank. Good Luck.

That kinda comfirmed my suspicions. I was wondering if the cables were tied to the frame somehow. Guess I will get the book out and start reading up on what I need to do too remove the tank.

Default Nope

I didn't even lift mine. Removed the front tank mount bolt but it wasn't necessary.

I changed the cables on my wife's '07 Deluxe and lifted the tank. Tried to feed the cables without lifting the tank and couldn't get them routed correctly.

IMO, it is better if you lift the tank, but you could probably do it w/o moving the tank. I just changed to braided cables a month ago, but I removed the tank. On my '00 FLSTC there was a clip that held the two cables together and secured them to the backbone of the frame, under the tank. Its also a bit easier to hook-up the new Throttle & Idle cables to the carb with the tank removed.

Do the these cables just pop out of the switch housing or are they held by a clip or something. Can't seem to get mine loose. Help!!

You will need to remove the two bolts that keep the switch housing closed. The housing will open up like a clam-shell and you can see both the Throttle & Idle Cables. They have a ball on the end of each cable that slips into a slot to secure it. Remember that your Throttle Cable is the one in front and the Idle cable is the one in back. You will need to back out the jam nuts on each cable adjuster to loosen the slack on each before you can "pop" them out of the switch housing. Remove the opposite ends from the carb and reinstall the new ones in the same manner. Nothin to it and you'll be done before you can finish a beer.
