I AM A NEW MEMBER AND I JUST PICKED UP MY FIRST EVOLUTION HARLEY THE BIKE HAS 28,000 MILES ON IT AND IS IN GREAT SHAPE I WAS TOLD IT HAS A MILD CAM BUT ASIDE FROM THAT IS INTERNALLY STOCK IT DOESN'T BURN OIL OR BLOW ANY SMOKE IT TICKS , AND IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS COMING OUT OF ROCKER BOXES I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MORE THAN ONE PERSON THATS WHAT EVOS DO. MY ONE BUDDY SAID HES SPENT COUNTLESS HOURS AND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS CHASING DOWN THE TICK WITH NO LUCK NEW LIFTERS ADJUSTABLE PUSH RODS SAME TICK MY SHOVELHEAD WAS QUIETER! if it is what it is ill live with it i just wanted some professianal advice before i go insane it seems to get a little louder when the oil thins out but is still just a tick not a knock, the bike runs great and looks better and i just need one more person to tell me its normal then ill be able to sleep at night not wishing i still had my 78 flh, so thanks ahead of time for any thing you guys night be able to tell me.dc
Chances are that if it has a cam, it has adjustable push rods. The push rods could be incorrectly set, especially if the previous owner did the work themselves. Most people are too lazy to actually spin the wheel for each rod.
This could explain 90% of the ticking. You'll never get rid of all of it, but you can get rid of most. My wife's Evo Softail ticks a little still, even after adjusting the push rods multiple times.
Evo's are noisy engines. My 2006 Sportie, started to get louder around 85,000 kms. A friend of mine is a red seal tech. He said it is most likely worn lifters. I'm waiting for the snow to replace the lifters.
My Evo, with 144K, EV13 cam and EZ-install pushrods doesn't have any ticking to speak of. The wilder the cam, the more valvetrain noise you'll get. I've never had an EV27 cam, but it's probably the most popular aftermarket cam for Evos by far. It has fast ramps and some people say that makes lots of noise. There's lots of posts on here on how to adjust your pushrods, especially in the Evo section. Start with that. If your cam turns out to be a not so mild one, you might have to get something less radical.
