That sounds like one hell of a ride/slide. Happy to hear you and your bike came out of it in relativly good shape. As I am just getting back into riding, after twenty years, reading about your experience will make me think next time I take my eyes off the road. Thanks for passing your experience on.
Glad you and the bike are ok...I hate looking at the speedo in traffic just for that reason...
I always try to follow the basic 2 second rule regardless of when I'm driving or riding. That way if the person in front stops suddenly (which happens a lot here in Japan), then I'll have time to stop. Sometimes though, traffic is too tight and then I have a choice - follow "too close" or back off and get pissed cause people keep pulling into my "safety zone". I usually end up following too close but I do so knowing that if they stop for whatever reason, I might hit them, and if I do - it will be my fault 100 percent...
If nothing else it was a very valuable reminder. Normally, I'm an extremely careful rider. To the point of being paranoid sometimes. I normally assume that any car approaching from a side street is going to pull out in front of me and that every car approaching in the opposite lane is going to turn in front of me. To this point, it's served me very well. It just goes to show that even a momentary lapse in concentration can be fatal or nearly fatal. So, please learn from my mistake and don't ever lose your concentration when you're out on the road. But, no more soap box speeches from me. At least for now. Go out and have fun riding.
Speaking of "relaxing" while on the bike...about the only time I'm relaxing on the bike is when I'm on the expressways...it's the only place around here where the traffic isn't high, and you don't have to worry about someone turning in front of you, or stopping for that matter...yeah, around metro areas the traffic gets a little tight sometimes and then of course you have to pay attention but once your out in the country again - it's pure relaxation...
Unless I have the windshield off...then the feel of the hurricane force winds trying to blow me off the bike isn't as relaxing...
