Default Portable GPS Locator

Has anyone tried wiring one of these into your bike?

That's pretty cool if it works. Buddy and I are talking about a cross country trip next year and this could be a way for the wife and kids to keep track of our progress.

Edit: customer reviews don't seem to be so great. And if I'm not mistaken there was some talk about our cellphone's now having this capability.

But you'd have to leave an expensive cell phone attached to your bike permanently; rig it to draw battery power somehow; and pay the $50/month phone bill 'cause no pay-as-you-go plan has GPS tracking. These little things are built for automotive use, are sold in eBay for $50, cost $15 a month to run, and run silently. Seems like a good deal to me.

But then, I'm the RoosterBoots. I'm trying new anti-theft device as we speak. It's a 6 foot long cable with a loop at one end and a handcuff-looking device at the other. Uses a 10-pin round key, just to make it hard to pick. Knowing that delay is the kryptonite of bike thieves, I've threaded the cable through a large, realistically-colored latext *****. You can't pick the lock without moving the *****. I figure that the mere presence of such a toy will attract onlookers and law enforcement officers, all of whom will help protect my bike. Also, the thieves will be disoriented by the subtle ickiness of it all, wasting precious minutes debating why anyone would DO such a thing and arguing amongst themselves about who would have to move it out of the way.

I just picked up an apple iphone. greatest invention of all time. I found an app that will automaticly post gps coordinates to facebook or twitter. Or you can use googles buzz. Also has apps that let you see current radar for your location. The headset that comes with it works in a fullface helmet no problems talking at 55mph. Kinda nice having a portable computer w/ gps and all that. One of my comrades freaked out and said the cia can track those phones i told him to do his bank-robberies at trash pick-up time and toss his traceable phone into the back of a garbage truck

No.

The police are on the way to your house as we speak. They have a no knock warrant. When they kick your door in, immediately lay on the floor and claim you don't live there.

I dunno if it would be practical for me, but if and when I went on a long trip it could have purpose, I guess. Now as far as your anti-theft device, all I can say is if they want it, they are gonna get it, might take longer or more planning, but when the picking is right they will be there. Keep in mind locks were invented to keep honest people honest.

a $20 throw-away, pay as you go phone hard wired and hidden somewhere on your bike and just left on will do the same thing without paying $179 a year for "service". if the bike is stolen, the Police can ping the phone and, as long as it's on pinpoint it's loction to within a couple hundred feet. All cellphones work. Just buy a $10 phone card every 3 months, activate the card with one phone call, and remember to renew your minutes before they expire (usually 90 days after activation.) Total cost per year: $50-60.
There are also a number of GPS tracking devices that don't rely on any "service" to track their location. GPS service is free; all you need is the right software to ping your unit. Check places like
gpscentral.ca or gpscity.com
they both carry a variety of them

If I was gonna get a personal GPS tracker, I'd get one of these. You can use it for flying or riding.
