You must never have encountered a rain/hail storm at dusk. I rode to sturgis and encountered some form of rain every day. At times it was so bad that the cages where stacking up under the overpass, leaving us no choice but to stop on the side of the road.
Sturgis had hail and severe rain and yes I was one of those that stopped and looked for some kind of shelter. Now there are some precautions when stopped on the side of the road during severe weather, leaving on your flashers or head and tail light, do not stand next to your ride and make sure that you don't become the lightning rod.

You've asked people to 'discuss' without slinging smack, and so in the same sense - no taunts, no dis - here's my question to you:

Why do you care?

What is it here that has you all militant and escalated?

"Barely off the road" is still off the road.

Stopping alongside the highway in a thunderstorm because you can neither see, be seen, or control a hydroplaning bike, is a perfectly justifiable 'emergency' reason to stop.

There is nothing illegal about stopping for safety reasons.

And that "causing a dangerous situation for the rest"?

Look, if you're in such control of your vehicle during a rainstorm, you should have no issues with staying between the white lines - so the fact that other bikers have stopped under an underpass during a storm - for whatever reason - (don raingear, wipe off faceshields, etc.) should pose no massive challenges for you. Just ride on by...

So why do you give a **** what other bikers do? Why does it matter to the point that you've cranked out two threads on the topic?

Ride however you want. Do whatever you want.

Its the highway...that's the 'freedom' people talk about.

If you're getting so tightly wrapped over people stopping under overpasses in heavy rain, try two options - first, switch to decaf.

Second, ask yourself why it matters to you so bad what other people do?

Speaking personally, it pisses me off when people try to dictate to other people how to worship, how to think, how to be entertained, how to live their lives, or how to ride their bike in the rain. What's 'right' for you may not be 'right' for others.

Take care of your own life. Ride the way you want to. Let others ride the way they want to.

Stop trying to impose your sense of whats "right" on everyone else.

Peace out,

Doc

This thread is not even worth an answer except some of us use common sense.

Jeez-o-pete! This thread is back again? Frickin bad penny. Phm6660, why do you insist on beating this old, dead horse. You must have read all the responses from your earlier thread, and yet you still think you're gonna get some support for what is clearly an unsupportable position.

Think about your brother and sister riders, not about yourself here. Quit trying to push your views on others. You're coming across like some puritanical busybody.

Chill, get off this dead dead subject, get involved in some other threads and join the forum for real.

Thanks for introducing yourself, and welcome to the forum.

I ride in the rain all the time. In the last 10 years, only needed shelter 3 times. If anyone was on 64 in VA between Bush Gardens and Rt 13 last Sunday around 8:30 PM, I almost pulled over. Riding in heavy rain is not the safest thing, especially for a new rider. Being prepared for rain at any moment is a necessity. I believe most riders are either ill prepared, unskilled, afraid to melt, or don't want to get there poor baby wet. Or the OL is bitching that her hairdo is going to get messed up and you give up a couple of man cards and pull over. You know your situation better then I do! I will agree with the OP on one thing, Don't park them 20 deep under one overpass. And wherever you park, make sure you *** is safe from a out of control cage and it isn't going to wipe you out!

I was wound up when posting the original thread and still am alittle but i am currently valuing all oppinions on this subject. All I am asking is find a ramp and get off! Also if your a state patrol officer take note next and write some tickets or better yet call a tow truck for them as they must be broken down as the interstate as far a i am aware is emergency stopping only. sure that this may shed some new interest on the topic.
thanks
first things first please keep this clean not ment to taunt or bash any riders what so ever but i feel that it is a good debate reguarding people who stop under bridges on the side of the interstates that was shut down by the administrator earlier today titled "idiots in the rain". if allowed i would like to continue so please no trash talking lets have a decent conversation and if the post gets scraped due to others i will just stop posting period.
Emergency lane is for emergency only, here. Stopping there is dangerous.
In Italy we have stopping areas at regular intervals on most highways. They are not protected from rain, sure. Anyway, I believe stopping in heavy rain is safer than going on. I rode on in really bad weather on road with insufficient drainage, and found myself with water reaching over the axles. Visibility was about 20-30 meters.
If one can stop and let it pass, it's better. Obviously, forming a bunch of stopped bikes under an overpass is not smart. Also, better to keep the blinkers on.
I've seen people stopped with lights off at night... Not smart.
Otherwise, if it's only a matter of not getting wet, you stop the time needed to put on rain gear, and ride on.
The human body is not soluble in water. It's exceptionally subject to crash damage, though...
