softail wheel installation help
Thanks
Dave
To install the wheel, I removed the caliper mount. Had to use a rubber mallet to "tap" the caliper mount forward to remove. I then jacked the bike up high enough to roll the wheel in place. Started lowering the bike just until I could get the caliper mount in the neighborhood, but not installed. And I put a little anti-seize on the caliper mount where it mates with the frame. You'll have to work with the caliper mount to get it in position. Had the belt pretty loose, got it on the sprocket, and pushed the wheel as far forward in the fender well as it would go.Carefully put the caliper in position, with the rotor in-between the pads. Did not bolt it on yet. Not much clearance between the caliper and the wheel, but somehow I did it without scratching the wheel.
Lowered the bike again until the wheel was in-line for axle insertion. DO NOT FORGET THE SPACERS OR THE WHEEL ADJUSTING COLLAR ON THE BRAKE SIDE! A little more anti-seize on the axle, and pushed it by hand thru the adjusting collar, frame, caliper mount, spacer, wheel, spacer, frame and adjusting collar. Bolted up the the caliper, snugged up the axle nut and adjusted the belt. Torqued down the axle nut and installed the nut keeper. And I think thats how I did it. And it works.
For me, the manual was about useless for this endeavor. Manual tells you to loosen, but not remove, the brake pads. Why?? And does not mention, anywhere in the book, how to remove the caliper mount.
Now, if I did this wrong, and there's an easier way, I'd sure like somebody to shine a little light on the subject.
On edit, somebody ought to move this to the Softail section. There's some smart fellows in there, and I don't know if they hang around the cheap seats.
