Thank-you to everyone that took the time to respond to the thread. I have looked every where I know to look and the price I'm asking should be right (good deal actually). I appreciate the input on the money exchange and test ride. I will follow Thomas's advice (No test drive ....If they really are that serious tell them that you will drive it too any mechanic and have them check it out). They are paying and it's smart for them to have a major purchase checked out.
Here is how I do it.... If they insist on a test ride, I tell them my insurance doesn't cover them as a driver, so I offer to take them for a ride. They can hear the bike run, feel it run and know it runs well while riding as a passenger. Then I offer them a "tail light warranty" - After they've paid cash for it, as long as I can see the tail lights, it's under 100% warranty with a 100% refund. They can ride it all they want, but once they ride it out of my sight, the warranty expires. They drop it, they own it, they've already paid for it. If they won't go for that, then they need to buy a different bike because that's a fair policy. Never had anyone argue over it.
I would go with the tail light warranty or a limited time mileage warranty. Like 24hours and 100 miles. Type it up on the computer and have it signed. Do the transaction in a public place. You never know who will answer the ad with other intentions on their mind.
If they want to ride it, have them leave a deposit equal to your insurance deductible. Give it back to them when they return and after you have thoroughly checked out the bike. With $500 riding, they'll probably be xtra careful. If they're serious about buying it, then won't mind putting down a security deposit.
First I want to thank the members that contributed to this thread. Very helpful. Friday some guy came to my house to look at the bike. I know at least one person suggested not having buyers come to your house but since my hobby is guns I wasn't overly concerned about that. My S&W .357 mag said everything would be okay. The guy (older guy) said he wasn't dressed for a test drive and I told him there would be no test drive using the reason you all mentioned. He wanted to leave a deposit but I told him I wasn't worried about it. He said he would be back the next day with the cash and we shook hands on the deal. He showed up as he said he would. He then changed up and said he was going to go through his credit union. I said fine but I would need a cash deposit. He said he did have the cash with him but wanted to use the credit union. I said the cash was fine. He then proceeded to inform me his reserve sheriff deputy friend was coming to test ride the bike. Supposedly he is a big time Harley rider. Again I informed him there will be no test ride. I rode it up and down the street letting the vance and hines sound off. He laid down the cash (which my wife checked with one of those markers) and I signed over the title. Know working towards that Electra Glide. Great forum and thanks for the help.
