Specs say stuff like 88db @ 1 watt 1 meter...

This means the speaker produces 88 decibels at 1 watt of power , 1 meter away. The higher the db at 1 watt/1m means a more efficient speaker.

In laymans terms a speaker rated at 93db will rock your *** off at the same volume level setting on the **** compared to a 87db speaker. It will seem twice as loud. Buying higher rated speakers allow you to get more sound with less amplifier.

If I know Harley riders, they like pipes, and be able to hear the radio too.

You should be able to buy better speakers than hog tunes for $100.

thanks for posting!! it is hard to explain that to someone. everyone thinks in watts only. here is a funny fact

klipsh horn speakers have a efficiency ratting of 104 and only need 65 watts to produce a spl of 110 and the same speaker in 88 efficiency ratting requires i belive it was like 1500 watts

I bought them from a guy here on the board. They fit perfect and sounded great however about three weeks ago while on a 1600+ mile trip I could tell something was not right. Next thing I know the right speaker is not working at all. I pulled the fairing and everything was connected and could not find a problem. I hooked the wires from the left side to the right speaker and it still did not work. Then last week the left speaker got a lot of static and it quit about two days later. I was actually only using it for the voice commands from the GPS at that time. Sunday after I got back from the NC State Rally I plugged in the old stock speakers and they worked perfectly.

One thing that has come to mind is all the rain I have rode in over the last three months. Actually we came though a terrible storm with heavy rain a day before the first speaker failed. Then we had nothing but rain at the state rally and the bike had to sit outside in the rain the whole time. I wonder if those speakers could not hold up to the weather?

No stereo on the Shovel.......but the speakers on my EVO could be replaced with dixie cups and string and it would be an improvement.

I'll get there.

When it comes to things audio, you usually get what you pay for. There certainly is no free lunch. I have. I have waaaaay more invested in my home audio (two channel only) than I do in the two Fatboys I own. It's all relative fer sure, but don't split hairs when it comes to speakers for your bike. Geez, the damn bike costs enough to justify it, doesn't it?

Yep, good luck finding auto speaker with a 104 rating. I have infinity 3 1/2 inch on the kawasaki and a 50 watt amp. I can hear it at 80mph with a full face helmet on. They are rated at 95 IIRC. I also have an electronic crossover under the side cover to filter out low bass from them. And the amp is under the seat next to the battery.

lets see
88 vs 104
88,91,94,97,100,103,106,109
1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 watts to break 109db if my math is right.

spl on my infinity speakers...
95,98,101,104,107,110,113
1,2,4,8,16,32,64

113db at 64 watts. max is 75 watts, so maybe 114db? max

anyone wants rocking sound, bring the bike over some weekend. Bring your credit card and a case of beer. We will go audio shopping, people will envy your sound.

What's the verdict on these JBL's are they any good, hold up to weather, or should I just go for the hogtunes?
Thanks,
