Keep the ultra, get lowering springs in the forks, lower shocks, maybe a lower seat.
This is the BEST starting points for her.
12" Progressive Suspension rear shocks $200-$250
1" Progressive Suspension front lowering kit $100
Then either a HD reach seat (used anywhere from $150-$200 or new for $300)
or send her seat out to Mean City for his mods.

Next step would be a HD quick detach kit for the tour-pak $300

ok, then who the hell passed her thru the MSF course? My point is SOMEONE FAILED HER SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINE. I've never taken a motorcycle course but believe I read that they teach the basics. well, isn't the basics learning how to turn, stop, maintain control, etc? Again, how in the world did someone give her the proof of successful completion?

About a year ago, we took a friend of ours out as a passenger on a couple of rides, and she really enjoyed it. She took the MSF beginners course at the local dealer, got her license, and proceeded to look at bikes. We tried to steer her toward something appropriate for her skill level, like a Dyna or Softail, and she seemed to appreciate the advice. We worked with her and gave her riding pointers. But in the end, she went off on her own and bought an '09 Ultra. She brought it over to show us and couldn't back it up to turn around in my driveway, so I did it for her.

Since then, it's been one scary scene after another. She has dropped that thing so many times, it looks 10 years old. When she stalled and tipped it in a busy intersection, some guy on a chopper yelled at her to get something she could handle. Then, she ran into the back of her friend's Yamaha and screwed up his saddlebag, bent her crash bar, and now has tubes in her swollen leg to drain it. She's still gung-ho about trying to ride. Now I feel bad for getting her involved. Don't wanna hurt her feelings, but I'm gonna have to tell her that she won't ride with us until she gets more MSF courses and practice, or a bike she can handle. She'll probably think we're being mean, but after thirty years, I got enough friends I can't ride with anymore because they're gone.
my physical condition has prevented me from riding any longer.i sold Nadine which broke my heart. I'm no hero; I tried riding her after two strokes but my balance and equilibrium is gone.I'm not 30 any longer. I want to live to see to see my grandchildren...

First bikes are (most likely) going to be dropped..go buy a beater, learn to ride then spend your hard earned cash..guess maybe for some, it ain't so hard earned...

If she has the $$ for an 09 Ultra, she probably has a grand or two for a used 250 or a 500cc bike to learn on. Then she can park the Ultra before she totals it, and save it for when she MAY become competent enough to ride it.

What the heck does she need to know that it is too much bike for her? A lobotomy? A funeral? I admire her heart but reality has got to set in eventually...... right??

Some of her friends should chip in and ultra out a sportster like this one for her. I like the look of it.
