18 and Daddy's Buying you a bike and your complaining about what?
Daddy's probably going to pay the Insurance too?
So when you were 16 did he offer to buy you a Ford but being the Spoiled little boy you are, you wanted a Porsche?
What you need is a Job, Then with your own Money YOU can buy Whatever you want or can afford, that way maybe you'll learn what the Value of a Dollar is, Instead of Daddy giving you everything you whine for.
Your spoiled little A$$ needs to get kicked out of Daddy's house, where you just might have to learn to depend on yourself not Your Daddy and Mommy.

wo. im completely grateful for whatever i get. i am in no way shape or form complaining about what i get. i was just confused on whether or not a ricer is gonna help get ready for a harley. you dont know me dont assume things.
so you think if i take the course ill be good to go straight to a harley? i also dont understand how going to a ricer first will help me at all....
I think (IMO) that your dad is recommending a other than HD motorcycle is because if you dump the "rice burner" it is not going to hurt your wallet or your heart as bad if you dump the street bob. I'll bet if you ask folks here what they started on most would tell you a Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha etc. LEarn to ride well on a used one of those work out the new rider kinks before stepping up to a motorcycle that shouldn't be dropped.
If I ever drop my RKC I'll be heart broken. I personally started on a Suzuki 750 gsxr. I'll tell you I dropped that more than once and I could have cared less. I learned how to ride on it though. Others here have said take a MSF course of one kind or another... I concur. Great idea even for those who have been riding for years again this is in my opinion.

In the light of day I see I may have been a little rough.
I in no way apologize for the content of my Rant.
I do feel regret for not making the statements more general in nature.
And Samcro1121 your right I don't Know you, I've just seen to many kids being given everything by Parents and not having any values.
Your father wants the best for you. Show him you deserve his confidence by picking a high torque, medium displacement bike that has a rich heritage and classic looks. Look for something that Harley would give their right arm to bring to market, but can't find a profitable way to do it(alas, remember Blast). Is there such a bike? Suzuki S-40 (Savage was the classic name) pretty much owns the domestic thumper market. They sound better than any twin and move out with authority, but they get weak above the speed limit--just exactly what Dad thinks you need!
Show Dad that you have good judgement and he might help you get on a Harley sooner than you think.

Yes, a "ricer will help you get ready for a Harley." The controls are the same (except for turn signals). Even dirt bikes, or an enduro will help you.
What you need to experience is:
1. Balance and weight control. (easier with a 400lb bike than an 800 lb bike).
2. Road Awareness, how to expect what others will do.
3. Respect
4. We may not know you, but we do know people just like you.
BTW: A 600cc sport bike will outperform most Harleys in all ways except for comfort. 600-750cc Metric Cruisers or standard bikes are good starting bikes.
Crashing hurts no matter what you were riding.
If you drop a $500 metric, repairs are optional. Drop a 20k Harley and repairs are expensive.
Well I'll give you my opinion on the Street Bob. I started on a 1200 sportster low and rode it for 1.5 years then traded for the bob. The bob is much easier to ride. Definitely more comfortable. I should have started on that instead. Although I had a lot of fun on the sporty....Don't worry about dropping the bike, just do yourself a favor and take the MSF class.

I went straight to a Fat Boy after completing the MSF course. No problems and no regrets! Even ride two-up with my old lady 90% of the time. You'll have to judge your own skills upon completion of the course.
