It's true. Harley is looking for a new location for the York, PA plant. Pennsyvania lawmakers are really screwing up. York will be a ghost town if HD leaves.
I had a chat with my local dealer and it is going to happen. I live in PA.
None of the places named are ideal for moving the York Plant to. If Harley wanted to really save money, cut utility, land taxes, etc. then they would negotiate with the state of Alabama. Do some research and see how many assembly plants have been opened in that state in the last few years. Alabama offers the best deal although they are farther away than York is but so are a couple of other Harley plants. Fossil
The plant will stay in York. A contract has to be voted by Dec. 2nd. The company wants to cut the jobs to 1000 from almost 2000. It seems the company does not like the way we chrome the parts. ( outsourced ) York has been doing the chrome for 20 plus years. Rumors have it big wigs started a chrome company or bought into one. Can you quess who is chroming our parts? Reducing the maint area ( outsourced ). I will loose my job, I am sure of that. I will still vote yes to keep the jobs here. York needs the work and my fellow brothers and sisters who have 20 years in would like to get 30 yrs in.

Milwaukee paper had the news that the plant was staying in York (I'm very surprised). But, something's gotta give, and job cuts aren't too bad considering the alternative.
As for the chrome, I've read many complaints on this site about the quality, and I've had some issues myself, so I'm not surprised they want to outsource the work.

I also heard that the production of Sportsters and V-Rods will be stopped until Jan. 2010.
That actually make sense, particulartly for Sportsters. There's so many low mileage used Sportsters on the dealer floor from the last buy-back that it doesn't make sense to produce a bunch of new ones.
I hope the York plant remains open. I hate to see anyone lose their job.
