that's the main reason I don't ride after dark.
Not to mention that our visual acuity diminishes with age, especially at night.
Even though our Georgia deer are a lot smaller than the northern ones, they can still put a hurt on you.
Ride safely out there, folks.
They don't have to be big to take you down, and what you are saying about visual acuity diminishing is absolutely correct. I was within city limits, but crossing a dark, narrow (but very long) wooded strip that is sandwiched between two well developed avenues. I noticed what I thought were shadows being cast by my headlight off of the right side of the road, when I realized they were deer running I looked immediately down the road to find the rest of the herd. The ones on the right that caught my eye initially were the front runners of a group of 12-15. There was just nowhere to go, but I am very fortunate. It had to have been God's hand. Now I'm trying to learn from it what I can, fix the horse and get back on. Good chance it'l be spring before I can do that, but I'm hoping I'll at least be able to ride back from the shop when she's done.
My soon to be brother in law lives in cleves oh. He took us on some country roads and i was pretty nervous. Probably seen 20 deer in a 1 hr time frame.
Last fall I counted 30 dead deer carcusses between Columbus and Bellefontaine on SR 33. Hell, I live in Columbus and we have deer running all over the place.
RamRod, glad you and the missus are good- I am constantly watching for fur in the evening hours, yours is a scary story. If it makes you feel better, my son and I harvested a buck and a doe in Wayne forest last fall- just outside Logan. We kept the buck and gave the doe to the Franklin County Food Pantry.
Wayne National is absolutely beautiful country through there!
Shoot more deer. The PETA folks won't like it, but the (remaining) deer will be healthier and we'll be safer on the bikes.
I'm for that! We pretty much eat deer meat instead of beef all the time anyway. My family prefers it. Deer, and Elk in some parts of my area, are the reasons I don't ride at night unless absolutley neccessary. And that is real a shame because I love riding at night in the middle of the summer. (Not to mention those dag gum Texas amradildos, pussums and skunks!!!)
Glad yours turned out better than it could have. Buddy hit on eon saturady also, but for his luck, not the Chevies, he was in his truck. Still, not a good thing either way.
Ramrod, Glad to hear you survived that. I live in a semi-rural area in So. Ill. My property is adjacent to So. Ill. University. That's 2200 acres of protected land. The deer bed down in the protected property during the day and cross the roads into the corn and bean fields at dusk and dawn. I try to never ride at those times. Two nights ago we were coming home after dark (in the car). A medium sized deer went across our hood so fast I wasn't even sure what gender it was. It was over before I could get my foot off the gas pedal. A few seconds different and he would have been through our windshield. Puckered my *** pretty good and just thought about being on the bike. There is no defense except going real slow. Of course then you risk being rear ended. Be careful out there!
