I had a buddy that was going to do a very similar thing. He was told everything from very little money to pretty darn good money. I guess alot of it depends on teh dealership you work at.

As everything else, your first few years will likely produce low wages and the small gigs until you get teh true experience and senority to move up and get the good jobs that come through.

Good luck to you. It will be nice to do something you love.

I know quite a few bike wrenches, and a few have taken the MMI course...
From what they tell me, you better do it for the love, cause the $$ ain't there, especially in this recession...

Most likely if you go to work for a dealership, after MMI you would start behind the parts counter until I tech position opens up. The pay at the parts counter isn't that great but the tech position is better. Then you will also need to get used to screw ball customers.

What you should do is get the certification from harley then branch out and start up your own shop. You'd make a killing. I hate taking my bike in and getting raped. Five hundred bucks for an oil change??? Oh, they take a torque wrench and make sure your axel nuts haven't worked themselves loose.

They don't call them stealers for nothing. If I was a mechanic that's what I'd do. There are a lot of harleys out there, you'd have a lot of customers, believe me.

Like *Night Train* said: do it because you really love turning wrenches on bikes no matter what.

Whenever the economy tanks, applications and enrollments at any post-secondary school (vo-tech or university) will swell to the point of compromising program capacity, like a tsunami crashing on a beach.

Education is great. It's expensive, but once you have it, no one can ever take it away. Just make sure that you are not relying education alone to provide your way out of this bad economy. Employers love these times because they can hire people with more education for less to do more with fewer benefits, no guarantees, and less opportunity for promotion. You'll see guys with MBAs who are expert in supply chain management happy to be working the loading dock, and inventory management consultants happy to be working the cash register.

As long as you know what you're getting into.....

I've got a buddy who's a wrench at a local shop here. He makes in the low 20's per hour. I've got to disagree with Zeus a little bit here. It would be extremely difficult to start your own shop right out of school. I'm guessing that if you'd just be getting out of school your funds wouldn't exactly be "bursting". But my buddy works at the Harley shop for his benefits, and makes more per week working out of his garage than he does at the shop. Believe me, he can easily make a G a week out of his garage and still have the security of his job.

nope it's no joke. They claim it mandatory to keep your warranty valid. It's the "scheduled" maintenance at the 800 km mark (500mle).

The charge is 300 bucks plus shop fees and oil.

Dino oil/filter is a hunderd and syn is 200 with tax all in you could pay 500 bucks. if not they claim they will invalidate you warranty.

That's your dealership trying to strongarm you into using their service department. Check out all of the threads on here where people are saying that they've done all of their own maintenance and changed their own oil and never had any problems with warranty coverage from HD.
