Another Long John question
I don't break out my heated gear until it gets down into the 20's. If you didn't get the temperature controls, you'll want to do that. Get the double, so you can do the pants and jacket separately.

Its good stuff!
For me, it is SmartWool.
I tried Capilene (Patagonia), Under Armour, fleece, silk, polypro (I'm a professional ski instructor, so I can get a lot of this stuff at a "professional" discount)......The new Capilene is better than it used to be, but all the other synthetics do not keep you as warm when they get wet. And they will get wet, either from your own perspiration or from snow/rain.
SmartWool is expensive, but I use it for skiing (alpine and XC), snowshoeing, riding, bicycle riding, and whatever else. It washes easily, stays soft, is ultra thin, and works when wet. SmartWool glove liners also double the warmth of any pair of gloves.
So rather than keep several sets of sport-specific stuff, I just go with one that works for all. It saves me money.
(For cheap base layers, you'd be surprised how effective a set of lycra leggings and shirt can be.)
Chaps for the legs was the best in cold weather for me.....
