I use a windbreaker under my jacket. The windbreaker should close tight around the wrist, neck and waist to keep the heat in and the cold out. They are inexpensive, thin, light and easy to bungee on the bike if it gets to hot.

He didnt say they were called "skinnies" did he? Sort of a compression long john but thicker. Got them at White horse Gear. Also, like the flannel lined jeans and have a pair of over pants.

With the heated gear, skip the under Armour. You just want the heated gear, with something windproof over it - jeans would be fine. You don't want to wear the heated jacket as your outer layer - it's a Jacket *liner*.

I don't break out my heated gear until it gets down into the 20's. If you didn't get the temperature controls, you'll want to do that. Get the double, so you can do the pants and jacket separately.

Not in the long run. If you don't go with the heated gear, you spend hundreds of dollars on different types of undergarments, different gloves, etc. Eventually, you'll have an entire closet full of clothes & a bin of gloves. Then you'll buy the heated gear and wonder why you wasted your money on all that other stuff rather than getting the heated gear in the first place.

Or, if you do more than ride motorcycles during winter, you find the base layer that works with all your activities and stick with it.

For me, it is SmartWool.

I tried Capilene (Patagonia), Under Armour, fleece, silk, polypro (I'm a professional ski instructor, so I can get a lot of this stuff at a "professional" discount)......The new Capilene is better than it used to be, but all the other synthetics do not keep you as warm when they get wet. And they will get wet, either from your own perspiration or from snow/rain.

SmartWool is expensive, but I use it for skiing (alpine and XC), snowshoeing, riding, bicycle riding, and whatever else. It washes easily, stays soft, is ultra thin, and works when wet. SmartWool glove liners also double the warmth of any pair of gloves.

So rather than keep several sets of sport-specific stuff, I just go with one that works for all. It saves me money.

(For cheap base layers, you'd be surprised how effective a set of lycra leggings and shirt can be.)

++ on Under Armor cold wear......packs light, wash and hang overnight to dry and durable....trust me you won't be disappointed....rode the Mountains with a long sleeve cold wear under armor shirt and a t-shirt over top...no problem. I was riding a Fatboy with windshield.
Chaps for the legs was the best in cold weather for me.....
