In reality, neither were bolted on when stock on the early ones. They slipped over a stub on the head, and that's it with a clamp farther back on the frame holding them on.

Knuck's didn't use a clamp, just jammed in the head like a flattie and hopefully a good enough clamp further down the line. All HD made Pans have a clamp at the spigot similar to the iron Sportsters have. Not a good seal. Shovelheads like on the red, white and blue Pan sealed a little better, but still not perfect. Hard to believe that Harley took 48 years to figure out that their OHV motor needed a 2 bolt exhaust flange.

As originals get scarce, and to upgrade to 1966 technology, a lot of Pan owners are using STD or other aftermarket heads. A "Y" shaped intake manifold with a rubber band seal provides better flow and fewer leaks, in addition to bigger valves, a higher hemi chamber, and the already mentioned exhaust seal.

I put these on my wife's '54 Hydra because her originals were crap and I wasn't going to spend the bucks for a decent set of Harley heads. As you can see, no "T" manifold visible (as in the lower pic of my '49.)

I think the others missed what you are talkin about...

It's just the same color as the background. Look closely and you can see the exhaust 'manifold' or 'nipple'. Very hard to distinguish on that front cylinder.

The Pans are kinda like an original Chrysler Hemi, they are just perfect to look at and beat all others for their day.

One of the saddest days of my life was when I realized my Pan was totalled beyond any hope of repair.

I have a soft spot for the Pans. My first was a 64. Kept it for 15 years wish I would have kept it for 40 (I'd still have it if I had).
