stock harley linkage arms
#21
Heard about this happening so often that I changed mine to HD linkage with Heim joints at about 20,000 miles.
However, on a trip a few weeks ago, I had my shifter go "limp" on me. Turned out, the arm that connects the shaft with the shifter pedals to the shift linkage came off the shaft. Real head scratcher as the screw that locks the arm onto the shaft was still tight. Put it all back on and about half an hour later same thing happens - had to start off in 5th gear - no problems. Turns out that that screw locking the arm on had flattened out threads where it is supposed to lock it on the shaft. I guess 35,000 miles of the arm vibrating the threads of that screw just eventually wore them down.

most people notice their shifter flat on the floorboard, and either shift by hand or rig it up with some zip ties, shoestring, etc. until they get to where they can repair it properly.....
maybe the guy should start a class action lawsuit? after all, its gotta be someone elses fault that he's an idiot...
