Default Problem shifting 77 Sportser

I was out riding, and pulled into the driveway and was unable to shift into neautral. I thought this was strange as I normally have no problem. So I took it out again, and was unable to shift out of first. There is not tension on the shift arm. I move it forward and it stays. back and it stays. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Inside the tranny there are some springs that keep the shift arm in a "neutral position. They coud be broken or the attachment could be . Either way it's gotta come apart and I wouldn't run it too much because if there are little pieces running around in there they can do alot of damage if they get caught in the wrong places.
