I usually buy used, especially for a first bike.
Look around, I've seen many older metrics in decent condition for $500 to $1000. Usually they need carbs cleaned and a battery. I've had a few that I polished up rode for a few years and sold for more than I paid for them.

There are used bikes, and then there are "good" used bikes. If you get a pile of junk, be it a Harley or a jap bike , you AIN'T gonna be happy. Be sure you get a good one. If ya don't know what good is, find someone that does, and let them help you. You don't wanna get disgusted with the whole thing right at the beginning because of a P.O.S. motorcycle. I've seen it happen before, and it wasn't a good experiance! Good luck to ya.

If not planning to keep it for a while, I'd go used.....

Get a pre-owned, then the dings ,dents, scratches, and drops don't make you feel as bad. Something about the rigid mount motors, bike will vibrate at speed, if your wrists are "iffy" now they'll probably get worse. But that's all part of it.
