Default What Have I Done!

I have a 08 RKC. I have been changing the oil myself beginning after the 1000 mile by the dealer. I changed the oil, adjusted the clutch and tightend some
critical fasteners. The fasteners were the front moter mounts and their links. I started the bike, slowly a chirping/squeeking sound started in tempo with the moter shake at idle. When given more gas it stops. The clutch has no effect on it. Grabbing the front brake lessen it some. I loosened them back up and used a tourque wrench this time, no change. I did have them tighter than called for in the manual. Tommorow I am going to put some oil on them one at a time and see if the noise stops. That is my last idea at this time. Anyone have any ideas what the h*ll is goin on??

I mean absolutely no offense here, seriously. As a professional mechanic myself who has seen everything, I have to ask a very stupid question. Did you forget to replenish the oil reservoir during your oil change? I really don't mean any offense, it's just that I have seen and in some cases done stupider things over the course of my career and I don't put it past anyone to let even that slip their mind.

I assume you feel the noise is coming from the motor mount bolts? If so, I would shoot them with some silicone lube.

Okay, after reading your post again and what hotwheels just said I figured out that you are saying that the noise stops when you give her more gas... I thought you said that the motor stops when you give her the gas. Sorry man! I would just take her out for a good 15 minutes or so and see if whatever may have happened to your mounts settles in. Touring models are rubber mounted and sometimes if you *** with rubber on steel, things squeak a little. If that don't work, then try the lube.

Sounds like you have over tightened the motor mount bolts to me. You have to tighten them to the manual spec's. Try to redo the bolts and I bet you noise goes away.

If it stops when you apply gas then take it out and run it like you stole it.

Get everything flexed out and back to it's limits, high RPMs etc.

There is a reason they call them "shakedown" runs.

If you had the dealer do your service about now they'd be assuring you that the sound is normal.
Hard to say without hearing it but from your description I'd be thinking the mounts. A little silicone spray should quiet them down. IMO the noise will probably go away during a few rides.

i would re-check clutch adjustment. if you removed the derby cover to adjust the clutch i would re-open it & inspect also.

just my thoughts.

as a softail owner, i do not have a rubber mounted motor. so i am having a hard time understanding how over-tight mounts would result in any odd noises. although it may be totally possible for the rubber mounted motor.
