I picked up a Chicago 1/2" drive electric impact wrench from Harbor Freight & it seems to be well built & pretty powerful. I have a couple of decent sets of SK & Craftsman sockets. Can these be used for the occasional stuck bolt or do I need impact sockets. Also would Craftsman torx & allens be OK with a 1/2-3/8 reducer. Got a great buy on the wrench but looks like the sockets will cost a fortune. Hopefully I can use what I have. TIA
You might get by with regular sockets, depends on how tight the bolt is.
Get impact sockets, they don't need to be expensive at all and are often on sale.
If you only want to get one set go for deepwells. http://search.harborfreight.com/cpis...pact&Submit=Go
And find a 20% off coupon.
It will be better than ruining your good tools.
If you only want to get 1 set go for deep wells.
Also I rarly ever use an impact for tightening.
The sockets will be fine for occasional use with the gun. Chrome sockets can break but I routinely use chrome sockets with my impact gun (ir titanium, lot more power) and haven't broken a socket. The torx sockets will be ok just be careful not to strip out the bolt. Its a lot softer then the socket and is really easy to screw up.
watch for sales at sears around Christmas.. they usually have pretty good sale prices on their stuff so you can make it your stuff.. I always buy my tool stuff from sears but always on sale.. the chrome sockets will be ok for a while, but will fail when you most need it..

I was looking at the 38 piece set for 29.99. Maybe I'll pick it up. They just seem to cheap to be any good. Thanks.
For occasional use you might get away with using regular sockets. They will break with any kind of serious use. Use only six point socket as the others will round off the heads of the bolts. I tried a set of cheap impact sockets. They might get you by for occasional use but my experience was that they are a waste of money! Try Craftsman or S&k. Well worth the extra $.
I would never use a half inch impact on allen or torx heads. I would buy a 1/4 or 3/8 drive air wrench for this and be careful with those. The ones that Harbor Freight or Northern Hydraulics work good and are inexpensive. Be careful as you may be on your way to becoming a tool Junkie!
