I am looking into purchasing my first Harley. I want to have the vin checked but dont know if carfax is the best to use or some other site/form. Anyone have suggestions or have carfax willing to help a newbie out?
If you are thinking it may be 'hot' (stolen), you can copy the vin number down and take it to the DMV or Sheriff's office. I've even asked individual cops to run the vin for me. In the tag registration office there is usually a desk near the front where a sheriff's officer is there for checking vin numbers, you could even ask him to run it for you...
I would say ask some cop you are friends with or that you know semi-well to run the VIN through NCIC to see if it's stolen. If you don't know any cops that well, go to your local PD or Sheriff Dept or even state police post and just ask them "Hey, I was thinking of buying a bike and wanted to be sure it's not stolen, can you run the VIN and confirm it's not hot?" I can't see why they wouldn't. NCIC information IS confidential, but you are not asking for the registered owners info or anything like that, you just want to be sure the bike is not stolen. Make sure you are clear on that if you ask a cop to run it for you. I run people's driver licenses all the time to make sure they are valid. Just did it last night for some random guy. Nothing wrong with it, lets them know they are driving legal and if they have a warrant I arrest them if I have to, but otherwise it's good public relations to interact with the public and help them out. Good lord, I've spent enough time on this subject....ok, off to work now.
BTW: If you are looking for possible crash history, I have found that too often these are not reported. I have personally seen several cases where a car was close to being totaled, yet the carfax showed nothing a year or more later. Perhaps HD dealer can look it up?
Thanks everyone. BIG help....asked the guy for the VIN and he said I could have it after I gave him the cash. I contacted local sheriffs in his town...sounds shady.

I wouldn't give you the VIN, either. Nothin' shady about the reason, too. Seen bikes on e-Blow with what appeared to be a good VIN only to find out it was from another bike far, far away.
If'n I was the bike owner I'd tell you to come look at the bike and check it over and copy the VIN so you could get it run, but after siccing the Deppity Dawg on me I'd probably pop a cap on you. (I loves livin' in Texas in the boonies!)

I hear where you are coming from pococj but an 06 flhx for $10K...come on!! I'm a newbie but I have been around the block a few times. Cash only and I can check the VIN after its counted?! "If it sounds too good to be true.." Besides, what if it was your bike that was missing? You would probably what was it.....oh yeah "pop a cap" in him. I would too if somebody pulled some BS on me.

Easy enough to get bike VINs for illegal purposes. You got a bike to sell and can't give me the VIN......you'll sell it to someone else.

Where I come from that's a reasonable price for an 06. Did you ask if he had the title? If he doesn't have it then walk away, but if he does and the vin matches the title and it's his name on the title then you lost what would have been a good deal on a bike.
