I just went to the Amtrak site to see how much it would cost for a round trip........ $672 for 2 adults and 1 bike.....from Lorton to Sanford
Amtrak's Autotrain rates are much like the airlines. During different times of the year, and different days of the week, the prices fluctuate.
I just looked up a one-way trip from Lorton to Sanford for 1 person + motorcycle on April 28th 2010, total price $205.00. That's pretty good considering the cost of time, fuel and any lodging.
Wife and I took the train from FL to VA last June. Cost $390 for the bike and the two of us. Some of our friends booked eariler than we did and had even better rates. We're going to do it again next summer.
Always, ALWAYS, take a sleeper if you're traveling Amtrak on an overnight train. I just went around the country on Amtrak. Seven nights all told in sleepers. The sleeping cars are quiet, comfortable and very private. They even have showers. And all meals are included if you're in sleeper. My trip was free since I had a tons of points built up using the Amtrak credit card. I actually have enough points left over for a round trip on the Auto-Train with my motorcycle. Might consider it to visit Mom in Ft. Lauderdale.
This certainly sounds like a great way to get down, still waiting from a prior post on this if there is any truck/trailer lots to store in VA so can plan this trip, thanks, this site is great for this stuff !
I wish the point to point were different. My worst section of riding to Florida is Rt 95 through NJ, Philly, Baltimore and D.C. Once you hit Virginia the riding is fun. If you could pick up the Auto train in Jersey and ride it to Sanford I would be interested.
Take the long route through West Jersey, Pensy, Getteysburg, Western Maryland, east to Lorton Va, nice ride.
