Default Dilema

I want to do some long distance two-up riding with my wife, however the softail isn't soft enough for her back. She injured her back years ago so is a bit sensitive to bumps and whatnot. She will take short trips around town but day long or multi-day trips are right out. She does have her own bike but her style is irritating enough that the last time we rode together (18 days, 4,000 miles), I about threw her off the cliffs in California

It's getting to the point that I may have to sell the Harley and get a *gasp* Gold Wing (say it isn't so!)

Just to get this out of the way first: No, I'm not getting rid of her. She's the best thing that's happened to me in a long time and I want to hang on to her. Enough that I'd get rid of the Harley, a bike I've jonesed for for 20 years, and get a Gold Wing to make her happy.

However, if I can modify the bike to really make it Gold Wing comfortable or close to it, (progressive shocks come to mind) without actually making that extra step that'd be great. I do have a nice Corbin touring seat that's really made a difference in my solo riding.

So would swapping out the shocks with Progressive make that big a difference? Any other ideas short of ejecting the wife?

Thanks.

Carl

Buy an Ultra,

You're never gonna get a soft tail to ride anywhere near as smooth as an Ultra or [:@] a Gold Wing

I'd definitely consider the Ultra. I think you could solve your problem without going to the dark side...

Goldwing will be the most comfortable, smooth and have more than enough power. The Ultra is good too. I guess it depends on how long of rides you do and what speed you intend on traveling. I have a friend with a 04 Goldwing and he was able to go across country with little no fatigue doing 700+ miles a day. I think they also have 8 gal tanks. He also was able to maintain 115mph with no problem on a lot of streaches. If your going to do a lot of long rides and your wife needs comfort and smoothness go with the GW. if you plan on doing some long trips with mostly short or day trips I would go with the Ultra

Take a serious look at the Ultra before you go to the Wing. Nothing wrong with a Wing, it's just not a Harley, and if the Ultra will give your wife the comfort she needs, why settle.

Regards,

Bill

i have been able to ride both for long distances..
i have a '94 dresser..rebecca has a '02 wing.. we go cross country in 4 days..
i've done iron-butt on the hd..1500-24hrs..
mustang seat progressive shocks..
hd has for me a more comfortable riding position i can ride it longer than becca's wing..
hd has a far superior luggage system etc..
yes the wing has more power and better stopping ability..however..
much better resale/upgrade $$$$ with hd also..
good luck on your decision..
for me it's hd for the long haul..
we'll sit out their at 80/85 all day.. it's not always how fast instead of how steady..
later..
bc
