Wife gave the OK, but.......
I can say that I have had safety courses and experiences on a variety of bikes. This I believed helped me stay out of trouble for over twenty years of riding. Once getting my own Harley after moving from Maui ot Oahu (Honolulu) about five years ago the experience involving other people was really new. There is definitely more of a "brotherhood" when you are riding the "real deal. It seems as though people want to come up and share their experience with you. If you find that really an enjoyable thought, you may discover that a great used Sportster is good jump into the workd that is "Harley". I made the switch because I did not see a lot of other brands of touring bikes out here and I knew that is what I wanted from my experiences.
A pilot friend once told me that a personneeds to have about 700 or 800 hours in the cockpit before becoming a good /experienced pilot. At this point the new pilot will have gotten comfortable and then had a close call to remind them to pay attention to what they are doing.
To sum this up;
1. Get some class time to learn the good /right riding habits to start with.
2. It could be worth it to start small and try a variety of bikes when you reach a "comfort" level with each one.
3. Have fun. When you reach the point of owning a red (the very fastest color) bagger you know it's what you want and you've EARNED IT! :-)
my wife and i have almost exclusively great times, i understand her, she understands me, neither one of us try to control the other. she wanted to go back to school on a whim, it'll cost about 100K when all said and done and i'm working twice as hard keeping up the house and working full time while she goes to school and works part time. i accomodated her to a great expense and re-arranging of my life, she wanted a pool, i got her a pool, she wanted an AWD outback got it for her. new bedroom set, new kitchen set, new appliances, re-doing the bathroom etc... i would imagine this is pretty typical for your average 30-40 year old married family man homeowner, the woman pretty much spends the money. you think i want to drop 5K on new appliances when the old ones worked just fine? of coruse not. and that is why i wouldn't suffer her telling me when, where, and under what conditions i may get a bike. i said i'm going to get a bike she said "OK honey" (i used common sense on waht to spend and she trusts me to do that), she said i'm going back to school i said "ok honey. let me know what i can do to help" that's why our marriage is great.
i've never had over $1,000 on a credit card so i wouldn't know about paying them off. but if you are putting 12 K on a credit card i would re-think the idea of spending 20K on something you've never done before.
doing it his way.

. Again, I stand corrected.
