being relatively small compared to a cage and usually all black or various shades of black doesn't help. There is a reason why road worker wear Hi Vis clothing
I'll never be convinced that a silent motorcycle is just as safe than a loud one.
Why not? I read a lot of posts saying that riding w/o helmet is as safe as with. Same people probably believe that flip flops and shorts have same protection as special jacket and pants with protector pads.
I dropped my bike and felt pain in my foot for 2 days. I always wear working boots with steel toes. I wander what would I feel if I were wearing flip flops?

2 Almost all near misses discussed were pulling out in front of a bike and misjudging the speed or closing distance.
I know for a FACT that this is the reason that I was taken out by a left turning Soccer Mom in 2001.
I will bet you any amount of money the Police Report says
I did not see him.
I would also bet the Police report does not does not say I did not hear him.
Cage drivers may occasionally be alerted by pipes but as a rule make no connection between loud pipes and defensive driving. Just my opinion from talking to thousands of students.
Not trying to make this a loud pipe thread, just trying to bring awareness to the cage drivers BIG 3 1. Closing speed (not neccessarily speeding but acceleration compared to cars)
2. Blind spots
3. It was not there ,then it was
Remember I am just telling you what THEY said so please add these to your defensive driving arsenal

I can add a cause to your list. The other day I was in the cage driving down the freeway when a car passed me. Just as he cleared, I signaled and prepared to move over into his lane. Being a careful driver, as I prepared to move I kept checking my side and lo and behold, there was a bike riding the cage's a$$. I didn't see him because, frankly, he was "lost" in the cage and basically tailgating him. I stopped my move until the bike went by and moved over. Had I been a bit less careful, I would have taken him out. Now, it would certainly have been my fault, but the biker was being unsafe riding the cager's back like he was. So, sometimes we have to ride and think about the natural things that cages will do and see and how they will act.
Well, that kind of casts doubt on the validity of all their other answers too ... don't you think?
No I honestly don't think so.
If I ask in a class questions about seeing bikes, hearing bikes, or observing bikes, my answers are usually straight forward, and by the way this subject and DUI are my two best participation discussions.
The cellphone issue usually dries up pretty quick as we are not allowed to use them so a student is not going to debate much with me as he/she knows they are wrong before they start. With the motorcycle issue many think it is not a right/wrong issue so they open up more to discussion.
I will take your point and use it though, I will try to back door the cellphone debate so they use somone else as their lawbreaker Thanks.
Also...Keep it coming, all these points are valid points I can take in to a classroom and maybe save a life.
