I caught my wife sitting on an 883 last January at a new bike show. One thing led to another, new rider's class, new bike, but purchased under the trade for a big twin deal. After one time on the freeway last summer she asked me how much a Dyna weighs.
We ended up back at the dealer we bought the Sportster from, but not until after talking to some others about what the bottom line would be. A little leverage goes a long way but having the trade to deal with matters. The trade definately does affect the end cost of the new bike. H-D gives the dealer $1000 for the trade-in promotion. They are under no obligation to discount the new bike. We paid maybe $1000 more than we could have gotten the new bike for without the trade, but got $1500 more than the trade was worth (at least this time of year in SE Michigan with a poor economy). In the end, my wife's happy and that's all that mattered. Also getting a tax break because we closed by the end of the year. I suspect that anyone who has had trouble with a trade under the promotion probably blindsided the dealer with the trade at closing, rather than being up front and writing it into the original sales agreement.
The photo is from yesterday on the show room floor. It's not worth riding here this time of year and the dealer will deliver the bike. I did get to see it going thru prep Wednesday afternoon. We checked the odometer and it shows all zeros.
I think you're right on the comment about people blindsiding the sales guy with a trade..nice Christmas gift for the 2 of you,
Why the change from 883?
My wife hadn't ridden anything since her brother's mini bike, and I won't divulge how may years ago that was, until we got her the Sportster. It took her a summer of riding the 883 to decide that she was ready for something bigger. It's all been mostly her idea. Before settling on the FX, she sat on the new Fatboy Lo and liked it also, but before we spent that much more than the Dyna, I wanted her to consider a stock Road King. She thought that was too much bike. I heard the same thing about hte Dyna once upon a time also, so maybe only a matter of time before we're trading that in for a touring frame. It's actually not a Christmas present, we just had to complete the trade deal before Jan 31st and I figured we would get the stimulus sales tax deduction if we did it by the end of this year. H-D is also extending the warranty until April 2012.
