Personally, I don't think that will ever change. History tells me Harley will merely reduce production to less than demand. They have done this as long as I can remember. I recall other times when the going was tough, they still held to msrp. They are better positioned for this than say the auto makers.

The MoCo forced many dealers to upgrade their shops, going to the larger "boutique" and expensive buildings. As a result, these dealers costs went up dramatically.......including mortgage/rent, as well as more inventory in the larger stores. With the economic climate, many dealerships haven't been able to meet their financial obligations. In some cases, the MoCo even demanded some dealerships close their satellite operations. Unfortunate.....but the sign of the times.

It seems to me that the MOCO has left many of their dealers hanging out on a limb. A lot of people use the term "stealers" instead of dealers, I believe that the MOCO has made a lot of them become that way!

Unk...if you neglect to quote the post your referring to, we have no way of knowing how to answer. I have a suspicion it's the one below.

I too hate to hear any shop closing up. With times like these the smart shops are looking inward at how to change and keep up with times. Its all about customer service. And going the 3 extra miles. I know I'm a business thats doing just that.

No matter who you are you want a smiling face and someone to help you with an issue or a need that you might have. And to feel like the person cares about the task at hand and will handle it professionally.

I think that SOME not all of the big stores tend to get lackadaisical and fat and try to ride there laurels and try to rest on past reputation not looking to the future.

I agree the businesses that weather the storm will be VERY Strong and reap the benefits when the gray / sunny sky's come around
Keep in mind, there may be circumstances we are not aware of and those savings may be misleading.

My nearest dealer has now become the local Polaris dealer also to get customers in the door and keep cash flowing, makes sense considering our short riding season.

Let's all say it together...

It's the ECONOMY...

As others have mentioned any business selling recreatonal vehicles is hurting now, it isn't just H-D...

The local Kaw dealer went out of business here a few months ago...

Another guy, for some reason, recently opened a new shop selling Suzuki and Polaris
and when I stopped in to look around he said he didn't know WTF he was thinking and doesn't know how long he'll be able to keep the doors open...

My dealer has all CVO's at MSRP + 3K. All other bikes are MSRP and they won't budge on price. They aren't selling any bikes and the owner won't deal. When times were good they would deal, not they won't? I know my salesman would sell 12 -15 bikes a week average and he told me he has only sold 9 the whole month of December.
