I agree with the stay out of Jaurez.. I was down there doing my thing back in the 80's. used to have to go into that chit hole. It was bad then, it is worse now.
Well last time I was out in LA I could've sworn I was in Mexico.
Judging from some of the accounts I've read and personal accounts from friends who were victimized by the Mexican police, I'd be more afraid of them than anyone else.
Couple things I've found in my research for my upcoming vacation in Cancun:
Mexican Constitution states that if you are arrested you are presumed guilty until proven innocent. Yes, you read it right. Guilty until proven innocent.
Our auto/bike insurance is no good there. Get into an accident and you stand a good chance of going to jail so if you drive there make sure you have purchased Mexican insurance.
Newest threat in Mexico now is the year 2010. Revolution happened in 1810. On the centennial, 1910, the celebrations turned into another attempted revolution. Now they're worried about what might happen next year. Seems like every 100 years brings new problems down there. Loved riding down there when things were peaceful, liked seeing the army at the checkpoints with their AK-47s because they were there for our protection. Don't much care for the random violence that is now occuring. I feel much safer riding in CA than anywhere in Mexico. If things ever get back to a semblance of normalcy I'll go back, but not before.
